I Asked a Father & Son the SAME Question About Moncrief
ATK Scotty’s father speaks about his son’s life sentence, the choices that changed their family, and the reality of youth gun violence in Jacksonville, Florida.
In Episode 4 of Through My Lens: Moncrief, I sit down with Leroy Whitaker Sr., father of Leroy Whitaker Jr., better known as ATK Scotty, for an emotional conversation about Moncrief, Jacksonville street violence, fatherhood, accountability, youth mentorship and what he wishes could have been different.
But this episode isn't about making excuses for anyone.
A young man lost his life. Other young men lost their freedom. And families on every side were left carrying consequences that will last forever.
Leroy talks openly about raising his son, the moment he believes things began changing, allowing Scotty to walk away from football, and the things he wishes he could have done differently. More importantly, he talks about using what happened to his family to hopefully help another young person choose a different direction.
I also visit some of the places that help tell this story—from a Jacksonville cemetery filled with generations of history, to a football field, and the location connected to the crime that changed multiple families forever.
This episode asks a bigger question:
What can we do BEFORE a young person ends up in a prison cell or a cemetery?
Mentorship matters. Parenting matters. Opportunity matters. Community matters. And personal responsibility matters.
I'm not here to tell you what to think about Moncrief.
I'm here to listen to the people, visit the places, research the history and show you what I find.
I'm Cam, and this is Moncrief: Through My Lens.
