What is power? An honest, good faith dialogue is the basis of trust. Trust is the foundation of a relationship. In essence, that is what every real relationship is. A plurality of those relationships build into community. That community is an organism. It grows and weakens, hurts and heals. It is the process of dialogue that makes it possible. That is the strength of community. That is where real power comes from. What many of us believe to be power is actually “authority”. Authority is an illusion maintained by those who are complicit with its goals or simply at it’s mercy. The system (or hierarchy) of authority that we all are born into is maintained by violence. It selects for those who are either not bothered by it or are genuinely sadistic and want to hurt others against their will. It rejects those who experience empathy for people who are different and often punishes genuine altruism if that altruism not complicit in that system’s maintenence.

We now see how this plays out every night on the news. We see the system of violence, sa**sm and blackmail that has maintained order in its own name for decades (if not longer). Alone, what can we do? The answer is very little. We learn to resist it in small ways. We find good people and have those hard honest dialogues. We can learn to unlearn the fear of one another we have been conditioned into. We can learn to trust. We can acknowlege our flaws and discover how to be vulnerable but safe. We can form the relationships needed to build the community that was always our birthright. It can be our power if only we could learn to talk once more and heal.

Narcotizing Dysfunction - it’s the process in which people consume mass media (like instagram) and begin to adhere to a concept of politics that relies solely on “being informed” and simply reciting the correct opinion to one another rather than ever becoming involved in the world around them and actually understanding why it is the way it is. Narcotizing dysfunction is what got us to where we are today. The solution to it is not to find the right media to consume and the right people to recite it to. The solution is to go out into reality and be challenged by what you see. Only then can we have the correct perspective to create the world we want. Otherwise, we’re just perpetuating an echo chamber that will accomplish nothing more than “impressing” our peers. The strongest cage can exist in our own minds. We always have a choice to change ourselves and break free of it.
