An ocean of gratitude to the Earth School team, our inspiring students, their families, and community volunteers for making this past school year on the farm so very beautiful. My heart overflows with love and thanks for each and every one of you. Thank you for being our village and for growing and tending this vision together.
Dear child,
We teach you outside
because we want your learning to be living.
We want your learning
to bring you ever more alive
We want you to trust
your own questions
and walk into the center of each one
like a dark, mysterious cave
or a wild river
that will lead you somewhere you've never before been,
And will lead you, still, to yet another question
We teach you outside
in hopes that you will recognize
that the same miraculous blueprint of nature
in the life cycle of the plant or the frog or the butterfly,
So too, lives in you
And in hopes that you realize yourself
Inseparable from the living web of all existence.
We teach you outside
so that you will know that
your food comes not from a grocery shelf,
but from the generosity of the land
in loving partnership with the human hand.
We teach you outside
in hopes that you are kept close to awe,
to wonder --
So that four walls won't keep you from
wind through your hair or a butterfly on your arm, or sun on your face, or wild harvested greens in your basket, or birdsong in your heart.
We teach you outside in hopes that you can touch and smell and taste and hear and feel what it is you are learning -
For, the living world awaits being known by you, child.
Yes, we teach you outside,
in hopes that you may come to know
Life itself
as the greatest teacher of all.
