With the warmer weather recently, the girls were looking for some food (with very little success). Figured we’d help them out with some sugar — just until some flowers start blooming! It’s not their favorite, but it’ll have to do for now 🐝

Well, the girls made it through the cold snap which means we had a chance in the “warm” weather to get out there to clear the entrances and feed them some homemade sugar cakes (dissolved sugar, lemongrass, honey, and pollen).

Also, say hi to one of our other gents,

Several people have told us it’s the best honey they’ve ever had!

With the temperature dropping, we are helping the girls get snug for the winter! Honey supers are off, and the hives will be wrapped within the next couple weeks.

This is who is ONE of the four gents who make up Four Gents’ Apiary!

Flower 4 on our Apiary Flower’s series is the GoldenRod. This flower is typically the last nectar flow that many Midwestern bees will get before the Fall comes. Though it plays a pivotal role in the health of a colony, when turned into honey, it carries a strong odor (smelling similar to dirty shoes). So we are letting the bees keep it for their winter reserve :)

Flower #3 in our Apiary Flowers series is the Queen Anne’s Lace. Originally from Europe, this flower has become a mainstay in the Midwest of the United States. Many don’t know that it is part of the carrot family and has edible roots; even so, our bees prefer the pollen.

Flower #2 in our Apiary Flowers series is the Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), or the Bachelor’s Button. The Bachelor’s Button is an exotic species originally from Europe that has become common in the U.S. and many other countries. People love it because of its deep blue color, and our bees couldn’t agree more!
