Throwback to the 2025 Southwest Michigan Summit!

From the first welcome to the last conversation, last year’s summit was packed with energy, insight, and meaningful connection.

At last year’s summit, we heard from innovators tackling everything from Michigan’s capital gap to next-gen logistics. We also dove into what it really takes to unlock funding and conversed about breaking barriers and bold innovation.

We want to thank last year’s sponsors: Kabundant, LISC, Kalamazoo Forward Ventures, Monroe-Brown Foundation, and the City of Kalamazoo for making last year’s summit possible.

Ready for what’s next? The 2026 Southwest Summit will take place September 21-22.

Startup Zoo Pitch Night is back!

Monday, September 21 | 6:00–8:00 PM
Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, 314 S. Park St, Kalamazoo, MI 49007

Five bold Michigan founders are stepping into the spotlight to pitch what they're building. Here's who's taking the stage:

SynaFox — Ademola Fagade
Reimagining how critical infrastructure gets built. SynaFox's engine, Synagent, fuses real-time data, predictive analytics, and digital twin simulations to help energy, manufacturing, and defense teams plan and optimize complex projects faster and smarter.

C'Mon Betty — Caitlin Burr
Turning surplus produce into small-batch magic. This artisanal canning company crafts bold, shelf-stable condiments from locally sourced ingredients — rescuing food, backing Michigan farmers, and shrinking the carbon footprint one jar at a time.

VolleyNet — Khang Nguyen
Building the operating system for a volleyball life. Match with players like a dating app, track your stats courtside and climb the leaderboard Strava-style, and give hosts and coaches everything they need to run leagues and practices in one place — no more juggling spreadsheets, group chats, and five different apps just to get a game going.

Anchor Balloon, Inc. — Dr. Vishal Gupta
Solving a real problem in the cath lab. AngioLock™ is a breakthrough angioplasty catheter that temporarily locks the guidewire in place mid-procedure, giving physicians unprecedented control in tricky arteries. Now in design-verification testing and on track for FDA clearance ahead of a limited hospital release.

GreenMark Biomedical Inc. — Grant Bloembergen
Making the dentist's chair a little less scary. CrystLCare™ is a minimally invasive, drill-free approach to preventative dental care, developed in collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Dentistry to help patients and providers catch problems early — before a drill is ever needed.

Come cheer them on and See Who Wins $10,000!

A startup ecosystem doesn't build itself. Founders, funders, and the people building Southwest Michigan's next chapter and where the people building it are showing up.

On Tuesday, September 21–22, the Southwest Michigan Entrepreneurship Summit brings all three together at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art, featuring 100+ attendees and programming on what it takes to grow Michigan's next major companies.

We are excited to have Keynote Speaker Jewel Burks Soloman of Collab Capital. Jewel Burks Solomon serves as Managing Partner at Collab Capital, an alternative investment fund she launched to close the funding gap for Black entrepreneurs. Jewel’s work and mission are about creating more access to the technology innovation ecosystem.

Before leading Collab Capital, Jewel served as the Head of Google for Startups in the US. In this role, Jewel worked to level the playing field for underrepresented startup founders and communities by connecting them with the best of Google’s products, people, and platforms.

If you play any role in this ecosystem, you belong in the room.

Leon Footwear Wins $10K at StartupZoo Pitch Night — Michigan Showed OUT!

It was incredible to see a full house — from our Kalamazoo residents to the founders and supporters who traveled from across the state to join us. Nights like this remind us why this community is so special: bold ideas, brave founders, and people who show up for one another.

A special thank-you to our judges — Alyssa Medd, who leads AI and data product transformation at Kraft Heinz; Paul Hontz, Y combinator alumn, Co-Founder of Post Sunday and a multi-exited founder; and Kenneth Nichols, Business Development Manager at the MEDC helping companies grow and innovate across Michigan. Their combined experience in AI, product strategy, entrepreneurship, and statewide economic development brought serious insight to the room. Because of their thoughtful questions and honest feedback, our founders walked away sharper, more confident, and more prepared for the next stage of their journey.

Let’s take a look back at the powerhouse lineup that hit the stage:

Grand Prize Winner!

Choosing a winner was incredibly tough — every founder brought passion, creativity, and real-world potential to the table, and the judges were neck-and-neck on their final decision. After a very close deliberation, Leon Footwear emerged as the grand prize winner, earning $10,000 to push their venture forward. We also want to congratulate Coco Mar, who captured the crowd’s hearts and walked away with the People’s Choice Award and $1,000. Both founders — and everyone who competed — made this decision one of the closest we’ve ever had.

Thank you to everyone who attended, pitched, asked questions, connected, and showed up for the founders. Your presence is what makes nights like this possible. We’re closing out the year energized, inspired, and already counting down the days until we’re back together in January.
