The 4:30 a.m. alarms, trekking to the barn in the dark, the sore back and late nights—it’s all part of the gig.
It’s cleaning the barn and shelters, washing and sanitizing, coordinating with customers, and making sure nutrition is always on point. It’s the breeding back and testing, caring for a weak calf, fixing fences, and handling whatever else the day happens to throw your way. It’s long hours, and countless little things that have to be done right, every time, day after day.
Your life is pretty much scheduled around four-legged gals who don’t care about your plans–or how tired you are. You don’t just pick up and go somewhere. You don’t sleep in. You don’t take a weekend off.
It’s a whole lot of work, and takes a whole lot of grit. Some days, you feel defeated and want to quit, but then you look at those bottles lined up in the fridge and realize what a blessing it is to so many.
Customers message or call to thank you and tell you how much they love the milk. They tell you about making their first batch of butter or cheese, or how their child, who couldn’t tolerate store-bought, can drink this milk with no issues.
There's nothing easy about it, but I’ve learned that some of the hardest things we do in life are also the most rewarding. So, I'll keep going.
