We are excited for rabbit camp next week! Just 2 weeks of farm camp left.

πŸ‘‰ Friendly reminder: Please apply sunscreen and bug spray before you arrive at camp if you choose to use them. Many families prefer natural options without chemicals and certain ingredients can bother our animals when sprayed in the air on the farm.

Thank you so much for your attention in this matter. We have loved having all your children join us this summer, thank you for bringing them out! You guys are the best.

We are happy to share that we will be hosting a micro-school at the farm, beginning in September.

If you're interested in your child attending, please follow Birdsong Living Education. πŸ‘‡

Before the school year begins, we thought it would be fun to give you a peek into what a typical day at Birdsong looks like.

Birdsong meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, blending academics, nature exploration, creativity, and plenty of time for childhood.

Our day begins at 9:00 AM. After arrivals, we may sing a song or two together before gathering for one of the most important parts of our morning: character study.

Each week, we'll focus on an admirable character trait and discuss what it looks like in everyday life. We want children to leave Birdsong not only with knowledge, but with wisdom, kindness, courage, and integrity.

From there, children break into small groups. On Tuesdays, they'll have the opportunity to practice public speaking through Show & Tell. On Thursdays, they'll narrate portions of our read-aloud assignments using story stones, strengthening comprehension, communication skills, and confidence.

Next comes our first academic block.

Together, we'll journey through history using Story of the World, bringing each lesson to life through hands-on projects. If we're learning about Ancient Egypt, for example, we might find ourselves mummifying an apple! As we explore different cultures and civilizations, children will also learn the geography of each region by locating places on maps and building a strong sense of where events happened in the world.

On Thursdays, we'll also spend time exploring science through the scientific method. Children will conduct experiments, make observations, and record their findings in their journals like real scientists.

After academics, it's time to head outdoors.

With 60 acres to explore, nature study is a daily part of life at Birdsong. Some days we may focus on wildflowers, other days seeds, insects, birds, trees, or animal tracks. The goal isn't simply to learn facts about nature- it's to develop a relationship with it.

Following our nature walk, children will enjoy a snack from home while listening to our classic literature read-aloud. During our first semester, we'll be reading The Secret Garden, a timeless story that beautifully complements our nature-rich environment.

Next comes art or handicrafts, depending on the day.

In art, we'll study famous artists and experiment with the mediums they used. In handicrafts, children will learn practical skills such as knitting, beadwork, whittling, and other traditional crafts that develop patience, focus, and creativity.

After lunch, the afternoon becomes a time for discovery.

Children will enjoy free play and child-led project time. While they can certainly spend time on the playground, sandbox, and outdoor spaces with friends, they'll also have access to materials that encourage imagination and creation. They might build fairy villages, design frog habitats, create nature-inspired artwork, or help develop our very own Secret Garden inspired by the book we're reading together.

This part of the day is every bit as important as our academic lessons.

When children engage in self-directed projects, they learn how to solve problems, work collaboratively, think creatively, persevere through challenges, and follow their own curiosity. These are the skills that foster confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Parents may begin picking up at 2:30 PM, and all students should be picked up by 3:00 PM.

One final note: movement is always welcome at Birdsong.

Children are not designed to sit still for hours at a time, and we honor that. Students are free to move their bodies when needed, and our days naturally alternate between focused learning, hands-on activities, and outdoor exploration.

Birdsong is also intentionally multi-age, welcoming children ages 5-12 together, as is common in classical education. Younger students learn from older students, older students develop leadership skills, and the entire community benefits from the rich relationships that form across ages.

With a head teacher and one assistant teacher for every ten students, Birdsong provides a nurturing environment where children can grow academically, socially, creatively, and spiritually- while still enjoying the wonder and freedom of childhood.

We can't wait to welcome our first flock of learners this fall. If you think Birdsong might be a good fit for your family, please join us next Thursday at Alamo Coffee for an information meeting at 11am.
