Don’s TV & Repair
3rd Ward, Milwaukee, WI
Don’s – A Nostalgic Blast from the Past!
Don’s is absolutely a MUST-see experience! This is not necessarily a restaurant that you go to for the food, but rather the experience (and the shakes).
First… ALWAYS make a reservation!!! Not only are they busy, but you will need a password just to get in! From the moment you arrive, you know this is no ordinary restaurant. The exterior looks like an old TV repair shop straight out of the 1970’s or 80’s complete with retro signage, tube TV’s, video games and classic tv and movies playing in the background.
Once you have whispered the password you are ushered through the 7-up machine -- yes really -- into a full-on explosion overload of nostalgia and memorabilia. Everywhere you look the place is packed wall to wall with old TV’s, movie posters, action figures, cardboard cut outs and so much more. If you are Gen-X this place will definitely trigger memories.
The menu is on the small side, but they have the basics with a few burgers and a couple of chicken options and a Friday fish fry. They also offer a Brunch menu on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until 3pm that include its own line up menu items including Breakfast Burrito, the Naughty Brunch Burger and Fruity Pebbles Pancakes.
This particular Friday night We started with the cheese curds; D went with the Fish Fry and I the bacon cheese burger. Curds came out with the main meal and had a nice crispy outer batter that was seasoned well. They also passed the cheese pull test! The Fish Fry came with 3 decent sized pieces of fried cod along with Fries and a side of cold slaw. The Fish was a touch overcooked and seemed a bit mushy, but flavor was fair. The tarter sauce that accompanies the fish is a unique recipe that seems to lean heavy on the dill pickle juice side, it catches you off guard at first but it becomes doable the more you eat.
My bacon cheese burger was exactly as described--a small single bacon, cheese and a patty on a potato roll. The overall flavor was good, the cheese was creamy and rich and could have benefited with the contrast of lettuce, tomato or a condiment to cut that. Burger toppings and Fries don’t come standard with the burger but can be added for an up charge (an opportunity that the server honestly should have taken). I normally only eat a portion of my order and 99% of the time take home left overs for lunch the next day. Not only did I not have leftovers, I was hungry when I got home.
We did get to sit at the diner counter across from the shake station! They offer an assortment of Boozy and non-boozy shakes that ALL look incredible. Each one starts out with a shake glass rimmed in frosting and sprinkles and when the shake chef isn’t making an order, they are ri***ng these glasses and keeping them in the freezer to grab as needed. We must have seen 30 glasses made while we sat there and the orders come not one at a time, but 1-6 at a time. With even the most basic shake looking over the top!
Overall, Don’s nails the vintage vibe! A fun place to go for an entertaining dining experience.
For Fun and nostalgia this is definitely an 8 out of 10.
But for the food… 4 out of 10
Go once for the memories, keep going back for the shakes!
Where should we go next?
