Simonin's Aquatic Farm

Simonin's Aquatic Farm Simonin’s Aquatic Farm — DIY builds, aquaponics, rustic steampunk, and regenerative systems. We are raising all things aquatic. Aquaponics!!!

A living workshop where nature and old-school ingenuity create something new every day. After a small setback in 2009 we found a humble little house with 10 acres in Kent's Store, VA to build the new Simonin's Aquatic Farm.

‼️‼️Update we have gotten an anonymous h5 sponsorship of $200 for each dog that is pulled by rescue. This sponsorship will be paid to the rescue directly to be used for the Hound that’s pulled. ‼️‼️

Last week our Shelter seized 14 Hounds that were living in AWFUL conditions & Not being taken care of. 💔

Before you get on this post and start making negative comments about Hunters, let’s be transparent: those comments will be deleted. That is NOT what this post is about. One bad apple does NOT make the whole bushel bad. This is about these 14 innocent dogs who need our help NOW.

We currently have all 14 dogs in our care, and we are BEGGING 501c3 RESCUES to step up and help by pulling some of them from us. 🙏

These dogs range in age from 4 months old to 4 years old, and we have both males and females. They have already been seen by a veterinarian and are currently receiving medication and the medical care they need.

The biggest problem right now is KENNEL SPACE. We have dogs doubled and tripled up, and we have ZERO empty kennels. Every kennel that is occupied means another dog who may need our help could have nowhere to go.

We cannot do this alone.

If you are a rescue organization, foster-based rescue, or someone who can help connect these dogs with a rescue, PLEASE reach out to us. Even taking one dog could make a tremendous difference and help us open up much-needed space.

Today’s project: turning a concrete mixing bin into a two‑stage vibrating worm sifter, because these worms are producing castings faster than I can drink my morning coffee.

The setup includes:
• Concrete mixing bin
• ¼" screen for the first pass
• ⅛" screen for the fine powder
• Recycled wood from around the farm
• And now… a vibrating concrete motor that shakes castings loose like a country thunderstorm

When I flip the switch, the whole frame hums like it’s fixing to take off. Castings fall through smoother than sifted flour, worms roll off the end like they’re clocking out for the day, and the black gold drops clean into the bin.

Kents Store Worm Farm is officially high‑tech — powered by vibration, recycled lumber, and pure country ingenuity.

WHEN THE UNDERGROUND GOT ROWDY
Folks, I went out to check on my plants this evening, and I swear the soil under ’em is throwing a bigger party than the Fluvanna County Fair on opening night.
Soon as I looked down, the glowing bacteria were hustling around like tiny nutrient delivery drivers. Not walking — running. They had little nutrient particles tucked under their arms like they were late for a shift. Some of the braver ones climbed up onto the fungal mycelium highways and rode those glowing strands like conveyor belts. I’m talking full speed, hands in the-air, “WOOO!” energy. If microbes had seatbelts, they’d need ’em.
Meanwhile, the fungi were acting like they just got a federal infrastructure grant. They were building new tunnels, arches, bridges — the whole underground looked like a glowing subway system designed by a caffeinated architect. A few strands wrapped around the plant roots real gentle, pulsing like charging cables plugged into a green battery.
Then the protozoa showed up, moving slow and peaceful like old-timers strolling into church. They grazed around, dropping nutrient pellets that sparkled as they fell — looked like someone shook a glitter bomb under there. Their calm vibe balanced out the chaos, like the fair hired them to keep things mellow.
But the nematodes? Oh, they were on duty. Sheriff squad weaving through the crowd, checking IDs, making sure no troublemakers slipped in. Two of ’em spotted a shady little pest creeping around the edge of the fairgrounds. They took off after it like c**n dogs on a hot trail, chased it right out of the county. Law and order restored.
Up top, my plant started glowing like it just drank a gallon of worm tea and found religion. Stem lit up, leaves lifted, whole thing looking healthier than a preacher’s tomato plant. You could practically hear it humming.
The whole underground scene was glowing, moving, working, celebrating — every microbe doing its job like a tiny union crew. Teamwork everywhere. Soil buzzing. Plant thriving. Microbe County Fair officially upgraded to a full blown underground festival.
I’m telling y’all… if your soil ain’t throwing a party like this, you might need more worm castings. Mine are hosting a rave with security, public transit, and a buffet.
🌾✨ Microbes: working harder than most politicians since the dawn of dirt.

🐓 THE GOSSIP COMMITTEE HAS LOST ITS EVER LOVIN’ MINDS AGAIN 🐓
Well folks… the barnyard is in an uproar.
Becky, Feathers, and Clucky — the official Gossip Committee — called an emergency meeting this morning because they “heard” Thomas is SELLIN’ THE FARM and puttin’ the worms up for ADOPTION.
Becky was pacing. Feathers was flappin’. Clucky was hyperventilating into a feed scoop.
Happy Duck even started a dramatic goodbye tour around the pond.
Meanwhile the worms were in their bins writing their wills and holding signs that said “NOT FOR ADOPTION.”
Then Old Yote walked in, tail swishing like he’s tired of everybody’s nonsense, and shut the whole circus down.
Old Yote said:
“Y’all calm down. Thomas ain’t sellin’ the farm. He’s sellin’ worm castings… and worms. Not the land. Not the worm family. Just the p**p and the extras.”
The Gossip Committee froze like somebody hit the pause button.
Becky stopped pacing. Feathers quit flappin’. Clucky put her feed scoop down. Happy Duck folded up her goodbye handkerchief.
Old Yote shook his head and added:
“If y’all want the full story, check the link in the description. And stop spreadin’ barnyard nonsense.”
Peace has returned to Kents Store… …at least until Becky hears the next rumor.

UPDATE ON WILDFIRE SMOKE

• AIR QUALITY WORSENS
As expected, Friday's air quality is much worse across Virginia today.

• SMOKE TRAIL
This map is a computer estimate of smoke for Friday, July 17th at Noon EDT. The smoke from Canada is blowing downwind into the USA. Smoke follows the wind.

• ACTIVE WILDFIRES
According to the Canadian government, over 800 wildfires are burning right now.

• TERRIBLE AIR QUALITY NORTH
Throughout the week, air quality near the ground around the Great Lakes and Northeast has been terrible as the smoke reached the ground.

• SMOKE AND HAZE OVER VIRGINIA
We've also witnessed hazy skies over Virginia this week due to the smoke blowing overhead (30,000Ft) from the NW.

• OUR AIR QUALITY WORSENS
On Friday in our area, the smoke is worse for us. Why? We've seen a subtle wind change at the ground. It's not much wind, but the wind near the ground is blowing from the NE.

• WIND DIRECTION IS A BIG DEAL
That NE wind is blowing the near ground smoke into much of Virginia.

• REMAINING SMOKY TODAY
Air quality will remain smoky throughout Friday and into early Saturday.

• WIND SHIFT SATURDAY
We should see air quality improvement beginning Saturday morning and more so Saturday afternoon. The decreasing surface smoke will be caused by another wind shift. Wind will blow from the SW and gust over 20mph on Saturday.

• WILDFIRES CONTINUE TO BURN
As there are so many wildfires burning in Canada, we'll probably see smoky skies again throughout summer-- as long as fires are burning, it's largely about the wind direction regarding impacts.

Well the farm is in an uproar AGAIN.
I fired up the grinder to make worm food, and the chickens and ducks acted like I was shreddin’ their retirement plans.

Kevin jumped on the fence post screaming, “HE’S GRINDIN’ OUR FOOD! SOUND THE ALARM!”
Karen started pacing like she was waiting on court results.
The Duck Union held an emergency meeting — Barista Duck slammed her coffee down like she was filin’ a grievance.
Meanwhile Happy Duck just waddled in smiling, “Y’all calm down, he’s just makin’ worm chow.”

And the Worm Crew?
Down in the bin cheering like it’s the Super Bowl.
“GRIND IT UP, BIG MAN! MAKE IT POWDERY!”

All this while I’m just standing there… grinding chicken and duck feed to make worm food.
Farm life stays dramatic.

The booster holds a staggering 3,400 tonnes of propellant and burns through it so fast that its mass flow rate equates to roughly ~ 11 pickup trucks (weighing about 5,000 lbs each) of weight vanishing into thin air every second during maximum thrust. The incredible physics behind it includes these key facts: The Engine Power: The booster uses 33 Raptor engines, generating a combined 16.7 million pounds of thrust. The Mass Flow: It consumes up to 17 tonnes (about 37,000 pounds) of liquid oxygen and methane propellant per second. The Mass Comparison: By dividing the consumption rate by the average weight of an empty Ford F-150 (approx. 4,500 to 5,000 lbs), you get the equivalent of tossing about 11 pickup trucks out the back every single second.

“The Wire‑Strippin’ Rodeo at Kents Store”
Well folks…
I finally got me one of them VEVOR Electric Wire Strippin’ Machines, and let me tell you — this little 60‑watt rascal is out here strippin’ wire faster than my chickens strip a corn cob.

https://youtu.be/PkXWrIRMtEM

I fed it a piece of old barn wire and the machine said “hold my sweet tea” and peeled that jacket off cleaner than Tracie’s countertop after she tells me to “wipe it right this time.”

It’s got 7 channels, a see‑through top, and a blade made outta steel so tough it probably bench‑presses tractors when nobody’s lookin’.
I swear I heard it growl at a piece of Romex like,
“Come here boy… lemme get that copper.”

And of course…
the Kents Store Gossip Committee (Clucky, Feathers, and Beacky) saw the box on my porch and immediately started flappin’ around yellin’:

“LORD HAVE MERCY… the human done went and bought himself a stripper!”

I tried explainin’ it’s a wire stripper, but Clucky said,
“Doesn’t matter — we’re tellin’ everybody.”

So if you hear rumors floatin’ around town, just know:
Yes, I got a stripper…
but she only works with copper and she ain’t takin’ off nothin’ but insulation.

If you see smoke comin’ outta my shop today, don’t worry —
that’s just me recycling wire like a man possessed and this machine hollerin’ “NEXT!” like it’s runnin’ the DMV.

Copper’s flyin’, insulation’s cryin’, and I’m over here feelin’ like the Sheriff of Scrap County.

If you’ve got old cords, barn wire, or a pile of “I’ll deal with that later,”
bring it on by —
No Metals Left Behind is officially open for business.
