While We’re Talking About Dairy, Let’s Talk About What’s Coming Next

Over the last week, many people have been talking about the challenges facing Louisiana dairy farms today. Those conversations matter.

My concern has always been the long-term future of Louisiana’s dairy industry and the families who have dedicated their lives to it.

As we discuss the future of dairying in Louisiana, I also think it is important to understand the technologies that may affect agriculture tomorrow.

One example is the production of dairy-identical proteins through microbial fermentation rather than mammalian lactation. This is not science fiction. Companies such as Remilk have already received regulatory clearances and approvals in multiple countries and are actively developing products for consumers.

That is why I authored HB 783.

HB 783 defines these products in Louisiana law and requires clear disclosure so consumers know exactly how they are produced. It also follows the same policy framework adopted in HB 512, meaning certain prohibitions would only become effective if the legal questions surrounding these emerging food technologies are ultimately resolved by the courts.

Whether someone supports these products or opposes them, I believe consumers deserve transparency and clear information when making purchasing decisions.

As Louisiana’s dairy farmers navigate rising costs, changing markets, and new technologies, I believe it is important for the public to understand what is coming and why these conversations matter.
