FIRST MONARCH CATERPILLAR OF THE YEAR SPOTTED!

The tiny striped royalty has officially arrived at Barefoot Ridge! Finding that first monarch caterpillar never gets old. It’s a little reminder that all those milkweed plants are doing exactly what they’re supposed to do—feeding the next generation of butterflies.

Now the real challenge begins: protecting this tiny leaf-munching machine from birds, wasps, and my children who insist on showing me every caterpillar they find as if I haven’t already taken 147 photos of this one. 😂

Here’s to another season of monarch magic, chewed milkweed leaves, and eventually a sky full of butterflies.

Have you found any monarch eggs or caterpillars yet this year? Share your photos below!

Everyone: Abby, you have a ton of plants in your yard….

Me: Yeah, that’s why you’re still alive.

Everyone: *nervous laughing* what?

When retail is your main gig you have to find a way to get rid of all the crazy that comes through the door.

Some people journal.
Some people meditate.
Some of us buy an unreasonable number of plants and aggressively deadhead zinnias until the urge to commit crimes passes.

It’s called self-care, Karen.

Thankfully, flowers are cheaper than bail money… most days. 🌻🤣

Shoes and I are currently on a break.

And no, it’s not just because we’ve had 5 inches of rain and wearing shoes in mud instantly makes your feet 20 times heavier.

Shoes are just one more thing to clean, and frankly, I don’t want to.

My feet can drag through some grass, get hosed off, and be ready for the next task without any extra drying time, sock hunting, or wondering where I kicked my shoes off 20 minutes ago.

So this will be me until September-ish.

Barefoot. On Ridge Road.

Driving my husband absolutely wild.

Not the kind of wild that would be fun. More the kind of wild that makes me wonder if I’m going to wake up one morning with shoes duct-taped to my feet.

Apparently, he is under the impression that I am incapable of climbing ladders, hauling flowers, digging holes, or completing random farm tasks without proper footwear.

After 15 years of this behavior, you’d think he’d catch on.

The truth is, I’ve stepped on enough things over the years that my feet are basically OSHA-certified at this point.

I’m fairly certain the only way he would ever be “cool” with me working barefoot is if my feet started paying the bills like those girls with fan pages.

And I’m not saying I’d turn down a beach vacation funded entirely by pictures of my muddy flower-farm feet…

But I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Until then, I’ll be out here collecting calluses, dodging thistles, and proving that shoes are mostly just a suggestion.

Just a reminder to all of you who make growing dahlias harder than it needs to be.

Test #38492 proves that if you neglect them in a small random rabbit bucket, for a week (or two) while you’re out of town… they literally give no F’s.

Stop making life harder than it needs to be, dig a hole, toss in a tuber and relax… & if all else fails put them in a bucket on your desk and don’t make eye contact with them.

Meet our head of pest control. His attendance is questionable, his attitude needs work, but his slug-eating skills are unmatched.

Don’t let the fish know that he’s the real reason we have a pond 🫣😅

POV: your backyard pond slowly became your entire personality and now you spend half your day staring at goldfish like it’s reality TV. The fish eat better than we do, the pond keeps growing, and honestly my toxic trait is thinking I need another one. Welcome to the Barefoot Ridge fish resort — where the water is peaceful, the garden is thriving, and the mosquitoes no longer stand a chance. 🌿🐟✨
