Can we please take a moment to appreciate this beautiful little weirdo?

This is Variegated Cockscomb, and apparently regular cockscomb looked at itself and thought, “You know what I need? More chaos.”

So instead of committing to one reasonable color, it threw together hot pink, cream, peach and yellow and then grew itself into a fuzzy little brain.

And I LOVE IT.

Even better, this isn’t some brand-new fancy variety. Variegated cockscomb is an old heirloom that was being written about all the way back in 1874. The color variation can be wildly different from plant to plant, so growing it from seed is basically a floral scratch-off ticket.

Cockscomb gets its name because the crested blooms supposedly resemble the comb on a rooster. Personally, I think they look more like someone dropped a brain in a box of crayons, but botanists didn’t ask me.

They’re also fantastic cut flowers and can be dried, which means this beautiful weirdo may get to continue making questionable fashion choices long after summer is over.

10/10. No notes. Grow more weird flowers.

The orb weavers have arrived.

Another sure sign that fall is creeping closer—and that you should never walk anywhere without wildly swinging a stick in front of you first.

Orb weavers build those big, beautiful, perfectly round webs that look magical sparkling in the morning sun. They also build them directly across every path, doorway and opening you use daily.

They become more noticeable in late summer and early fall when they’ve grown larger. They’re harmless garden helpers that catch mosquitoes, flies, moths and other insects.

At least, that’s what science says.

Personally, I think they’re harvesting souls one unsuspecting face at a time.

One of the greatest compliments I receive while cutting flowers doesn’t come from a person.

It’s when the bees are so busy enjoying them that they refuse to leave—even after I cut the stem.

I picked up this little buzzer, carried her across the yard, and put her directly into a vase. She never stopped working. Just accepted the unexpected relocation and went right back to business.

Apparently, Barefoot Ridge flowers come with the occasional tiny passenger.

Sunflowers are the neighbors who move to the country for privacy and then complain they feel isolated.

They want other sunflowers nearby—but absolutely not close enough for their leaves to touch. Dwarf varieties require 12–18 inches of personal space. Tall varieties want 24–36 inches. Mammoths demand 3–4 feet, a privacy fence and written notice before you enter their yard.

Plant them too close and suddenly Deborah next door is stealing their water, blocking the breeze and spreading powdery mildew throughout the neighborhood.

Plant them too far apart and now they’re lonely.

Unless they were planted by a squirrel. Then they’ll grow six inches from a foundation, directly beneath another plant, sideways through the porch steps and somehow produce the healthiest sunflower you’ve ever seen.

Apparently, spacing requirements only apply when I’m planting them.

Mine can file a complaint with the squirrel.

My pod corn is finally doing its weird little thing!

With regular corn, all the kernels share one husk like a normal, cooperative family. Pod corn decided every kernel needed its own private room, so each one grows inside a tiny husk-like covering.

Is it practical? Not especially.

Did I plant it solely because it was strange and I needed to see it with my own eyes? Absolutely.

Now we wait to see what this wonderfully weird ear looks like when it’s fully grown.
