Soooo… This one is making the rounds this morning. I hope the first thing your son’s professor did was sit him down and show him the scientific method. Sample size? Variables? Nope! Just a permanent marker and some corn. I love how the poster says, “This pretty much says all we need to know about GMO products.” Does it though?
If you removed the very “scientific labels” from the corn, what might your hypothesis be? That the squirrel got to the organic corn first, maybe? Time, variables, sample size, varieties, squirrel density, brix level, are not taken into account.
By this logic, I could claim that raccoons prefer Syngenta Triple Stacked sweet corn to hybrid providence sweet corn, because that is what they ate on my farm, but I always just assumed it was opportunistic feeding.
There is nothing wrong with choosing not to eat GE foods. As a consumer you have that choice. I want you to have that choice. I also want you making educated decisions based on factual information.
I hope this young man got an F and was thoroughly educated on the difference between Anecdotal Evidence and Scientific Evidence. I hope the prof then showed him a picture of maize circa 4000 BC. Nothing “natural” about corn as we have been modifying it forever! This is also an appeal to nature fallacy as well. Something in nature won’t eat it therefore it is bad. When I was in college I used to feed the squirrels outside my window Captain Crunch. They loved me for it. I also threw them bread a few times. They didn’t eat it. So based on the same reasoning of this “experiment”, I can conclude that bread is bad and Captain Crunch is good, because the squirrels said so.
Food based fear mongering is not the way to go. These folks need to talk about why a food choice is right for them without lying about food they obviously don’t understand. They need to just stop this nonsense. They then need to enjoy the fact that they have choices and stop trashing other farmers methods.
By the way, the squirrels absolute favorite was CC with crunchberries… So according to Magic Marker Scientist, Captain Crunch crunchberries are the ultimate in nature approved food.
