My mom bought this recipe book for me a few years ago to fill out for my girls. I hit the half-way point this last weekend. I cook a lot for our family and love to try new things but the only stuff that makes it into this book are family “staples” or special recipes that I’ve tweaked so much over time they wouldn’t be “google-able” at this point. The things we leave for the future generations are so important. Be it recipes, skills, attitudes towards people and community. My grandmother was a lovely woman and best known for her prowess in the kitchen. Some of my favorite memories are me sitting on the counter watching her or “helping” her cook while she talked with me. Lately, I try hard not to let cooking and mealtime become a chore anymore. Even if it takes longer or produces more dishes I let the girls help. In fact our whole days have become a lot less hurried and much more graceful as a result. I’ve heard you can’t force quality but you can increase quantity in regards to time with your children and as a result may have more of the former. In the face of all that’s been going on lately both in the world and at home, I’m finding myself more grounded than ever and watching my daughters grow into little chefs and wonderful young ladies is my biggest joy. If you don’t have a recipe book get one. One day I hope to turn this into a hardcover book for them and my sister and her girls.
