This has been rolling around in my brain for a few weeks now and I need people to understand something…we are not becoming rich by raising beef for American consumers. We do it because we believe in the nutrition and quality of our product, love raising animals, and are proud to offer an alternative option for those who are looking for it.
Here’s the math on ground beef.
Before feeding a cow anything…
$1.72-1.77 per pound X 1200 pound cow =$2064
Add $1000 in processing per cow= $3000 per cow in expenses.
We average 400 pound for ground beef per cow.
$3000/400=$7.50/pound to break even.
Please understand this is just for a cow that no longer was suitable for raising calves and just made into ground beef.
This is the cheapest option we have. This is not a feeder calf that will also provide high quality steaks (which takes more feed and resources). These prices do not include fuel, marketing, or feed costs of any sort. It’s the down and dirty of the cow and processing cost.
I ask you to stick with the American cattle producers if at all feasible for your family, because we are just out here trying to make a living the same as you. I will also add that if local beef is not feasible have no shame in buying beef where ever you can.
Thank you for listening to my rant…
From your neighbor, friend, and local cattle producers!
Maybe instead of Trump focusing so much of the increase of American beef he should look at how much it costs to raise one.
