Beautiful weather for calving.
A small family farm raising Grass-fed Beef, Grass-fed Goats and Pastured Pork that is healthier for both our customers and our environment.
Beautiful weather for calving.
Socrates, my American Aberdeen Angus, or Lowline, bull. This guy keeps body condition on pasture or hay alone all year long, even during the breeding season. Looking forward to seeing the carcass quality of his first offspring this year.
Another healthy calf on the ground, this one is a heifer. It is exciting to see the results of my breeding program come to life. This is one of my favorite first calf heifers, 50% Longhorn and 50% American Aberdeen Angus.
Just like that....everybody wants to have the first calf of the year. A healthy little bull calf is the first on the ground.
Checking cows tonight and this little heifer should be dropping the first calf of the year any day now. Several of the heifers are bagged up and getting close to calving. Hoping for a healthy group of calves this Spring.
Great weather for working outside today. William was over to check on the bees this afternoon and they are already busy bringing in fresh pollen. It is interesting to note just how calm these bees are when working the Layens hive, as you see, no protection necessary. You would not be pulling frames without protection if this was a traditional vertical hive. #Layenshive
Kids love em'

Took advantage of the great weather to clean up a few fallen limbs. The honey bees are taking advantage of the warm weather and soaking up a little sunshine.
Warm weather has the sap flowing good this week and the bees are out soaking up a little sunshine too. Gotta love spring on the farm.
Adventurous afternoon in the woods gathering sap for another batch of Maple Syrup. With the warmer weather forecast this week, I may have to boil every day to keep up.
Sampled a couple packages of the new Hawaiian flavors last night at Jigg's, in Alexis. By the customer reviews, I think we have a couple winning flavors here.
You can currently get a package of the new flavors at:
Ladd's in Williamsfield
Alpha Mart in Alpha
Nowhere Bar and Grill in Victoria
These new flavors will be coming to more locations in the next few weeks.
Fresh bedding and the heat lamp for the new kid tonight.
First attempt was a great success. There are a few minor things to work on, but the overall quality and flavor are phenomenal.
Early season sap delivers a light amber colored syrup with a very delicate maple flavor. I ended up with just about 1 pint of syrup from just shy of 5 gallons of sap. Using the equipment that I already had made this process a bit slower than I would have liked, but this may be something that I will look at adding on a larger scale in the future. For now, I will focus on refining the process.
Warm weather has the sap flowing today! Going to boil down this batch of sap this afternoon while I am working on fence and hopefully have enough fresh homemade Maple Syrup for breakfast tomorrow. The trees I have tapped should yield about 1 quart of syrup from 20 gallons of sap, maybe a little better depending on sugar content of the sap.
First day collecting sap for Maple Syrup. Takoda handles the muddy and slick hillsides much better than me.
Excited to spend a little time in the woods tapping a few trees to begin learning the art of making syrup. Lots of exciting things happening on the farm.
Everyone enjoys the warmer weather, it feels like Spring this week. I am really looking forward to calving season and seeing what these crossbred heifers give us for calves. I couldn't be happier with how these girls are looking.
Anybody have a guess on what these are used for? Excited to experiment a little this Spring.
Double J Pastures Beef Sticks are in the cooler.
Double J Pastures Beef Sticks are now available at the Alpha Mart convenience store in Alpha. Stop in and grab a pack this weekend!
Yesterday when I delivered cattle to Eureka Locker, I also picked up beef and sampled a couple of the new beef stick flavors that I am adding to the lineup. The Hawaiian Beef Sticks, with chunks of pineapple and a sweet flavor, are going to be a hit.
If you ordered a case of ground beef, it is in now, I will be in contact to schedule your pickup or delivery in the next couple of days. I also have several 2# packages of ground beef patties available, check the online store or send me a message if you are interested in some.
Hitting the road early this morning, heading to Eureka Locker, with a load of cattle. This will be the last load going until later this Spring.
Exciting to see the bees survived the winter! The warm weather has them buzzing about today. Looking forward to placing swarm boxes again this spring and adding a few hives.
Yesterday's wind blew over the mobile chicken coop and caused quite a bit of damage. Thankfully there were no chickens in it at the time. Now it is time to go back to the drawing board and put 6×6 runners under it and flip it back over. I will redesign a mobile coop for the pasture at a later time and make this a stationary coop for laying hens by the house.
Altona Food and Gas is now carrying Double J Pastures Beef Sticks. Stop in and grab s pack or three to go.
ConocoPhillips in Alexis is now stocked with Double J Pastures Beef Sticks. Stop in and grab a pack to go! First delivery of beef sticks to Dahinda General Store for the 2022 season. Great little old fashioned store with something for everyone.
Lots of exciting things happening with Double J Pastures Beef Sticks this year. As I begin to partner with more vendors to sell my line of beef sticks, it becomes necessary to add bar codes for scanning at point of sale. I will also be adding a Quick Read code to the labeling that will make it easy for customers to go right to the Double J Pastures website and learn about the products offered.
Coming soon I will also be adding 3 new flavors of beef sticks to the line up. The all new plain beef sticks will be seasoned with a summer sausage seasoning blend for those of you who like a traditional flavor. Also, I will be testing 2 Hawaiian flavored beef sticks at a few locations, one will be straight Hawaiian and the other will be a Hawaiian with Jalapeno.
Made it back home and the sun popped out just in time for a couple quick pictures of chore time.
Cattle loaded early and heading to Eureka Locker, going to be a long drive today.
It's Monday, time to get ready for the winter weather coming in tomorrow afternoon.
Interesting fact of the day......Cattle are grazers and goats are browsers.
Takoda is in training to learn a little bit of patience with the livestock, he has a lot of energy. I think that he is coming along pretty well, this is the first time he has been able to be in with the goats without jumping at them.
Great day for hauling hay ahead of the winter weather forecast for next week.
