Square V Family Farm Welcome to our page! It started on 3 acres, and moved to our 33 acre farm where we raise hens for eggs, cattle for beef and cultivate grass hay from the fields.

Sure is a beautiful morning to wake up at 5:45 to a fresh, healthy calf out of a mama that has never birthed unassisted! On top of that, this mama has ALWAYS given is black calves. #4 is where it’s at! So thankful that Grace was able to do this on her own, no assistance needed, and the calf appears to be healthy and thriving as far as fresh calves are concerned. Welcome to the farm Gemini!

Posting about the good days is the best. To be positive and share the cuteness and fluffy buts that we get to hang out with on a daily basis is a blessing.

And then. There are days. Weeks even. Where, raising cattle is downright heart-breaking. We had our first c-section on the farm. It seemingly went perfectly. Outwardly mama cow looked great. But, something just was not right. she didn't seem to be bouncing back, and we lost her about 48 hours later.

The calf was doing alright, not great. We all spent time nursing that baby, caring, monitoring, treating, anything that would even remotely have a chance at a positive impact for this heifer is what we did. And yet, we ended up losing the heifer as well. Our vet, was absolutely amazing and considerate and compassionate and helpful through all of it. Even still. That heifer just wasn't making it.

That marked calf #4 that we lost this year. It has been HARD. It has been stressful. It has been heart-breaking. And then, losing a FANTASTIC mama cow on top of it that we raised from a bottle calf just adds to it.

Why do I post this? We don't need criticized so just stay in your lane with that stuff. But, this is cattle reality. And when we are in the market of raising quality healthy cattle, this hits HARD.
