It is truly an honor and is very humbling to have received the 2023 Dave Evans BREEDER OF THE YEAR Award. It took a lot of hard work and support from so many good people. I know I will unintentionally leave someone out that certainly deserves recognition, but I do want to acknowledge the help of some of the people in the longhorn industry who were there in the beginning of my journey and shared their knowledge and support.
My first real advisor was Suzanne Torkildsen. In the beginning and to this day, I still chuckle at sitting next to her and her slapping my bidding hand. Even so, I ended up buying 9 cows because it was so much fun to bid on what turned out to be a not-so-great selection of animals even though Suzanne did her best to stop me.
Soon to follow in my journey were John and Debra Helm who gave me tons of advice about what not to do. Again, I initially ignored the advice because it was so much fun to buy. It is not uncommon for new breeders to make the same mistakes; but had I listened, I could have saved myself a lot of time and money.
Then along came Dale Hunt, who was probably the first person that gave me his wisdom that I completely soaked in from the beginning. With the money I was spending and getting nowhere, I recognized that it was time to get serious. Dale told me to "find a direction." Great Advice!
While the general path was to "make your way with cows," I was fascinated with bulls. At that point, Mark Hubbell came into the picture selling me Hubbells Jeremiah 29:11. I later partnered with him on Hubbells 20 Gauge and will always consider both decisions to be great ones.
Jimmy Jones, Terry King, and Nancy Dunn followed. I met them when I became interested in futurities. My initial endeavors were less than successful, and I was discouraged. They gave me the best advice I could have gotten at the time. "If your animals are in the top 50%, you are making headway and moving in the right direction." Bottom line, don't get discouraged just because you don't win. Focus on where your animals fell short and work on correcting the shortcomings.
John and Christy Randolph always made themselves available for my many questions, and their advice was rock solid. You can learn a lot from following John around a futurity and checking out what he likes. It gave me a clear picture of what to look for in an animal.
Ann Gravett introduced me to a whole new side of the industry by attending her sales on the East Coast. To me, she sets the standard on what this industry should be about. I will always say attending one of her sales should be on your bucket list.
Finally, I must mention Chase Vasut, Dylan Skarpa and Ben Stone. While they never give me the elder respect I most certainly deserve, they have always been there to support me and, even on a rare occasion, give me some worthwhile wise remark to think about.
There are so many more people who have played a role as I have made my way to this moment; but, as you can see, it has already become a novel. Please just know that I respect you and thank you for your contribution to this wild and fulfilling journey.
