Cows consume a fair amount of byproducts, or , if you will, waste from other food processing activities, and keeps those things out of landfills (where they would decompose and produce methane). Derrick explains why the new ‘controversy’ over palm oil byproducts fed to cows is just a ploy for your money.

Hi all, this is a drone view of our "home farm" located in the town of Mannsville. I shot this in the fall 2 years ago. It is the original farm that was named Locust Hill Farm back in 1974 when it housed 40 registered Holsteins. This is the sister dairy to North Ridge Dairy. Over the past 40+ years it has grown into this beautiful place that I personally call home. Together, Locust Hill Farm and Northridge Dairy stand together as Locust Hill Dairy LLC.

Here’s some simple facts from an Oregon state dairy farmer that explains the math of the climate change lie that has been thrust upon animal agriculture. The fossil fuel industry spends a fortune lobbying and advertising to shift climate change blame to cattle. Listen and learn. Thank you.

Solutions, not complaints.

It is easy to blame dairy farmers. People already don't like us and, as an added bonus, dairy farmers don't tend to fight back much. The recent campaign by Starbucks to reduce their use of dairy products and push alternatives made out of plants, such as almonds, is once again putting dairy farmers in a bad light.

But think about it.

If their concern is environmental impact, can we talk about their 31,000 stores with 1-9 cars idling in line, which are creating emissions? Maybe a solution would be to get rid of drive thrus.

If their concern is environmental impact, why are they wanting to transport plant/nut beverages thousands of miles cross country and worldwide, when they could source dairy products that are local? They could reduce emissions by using local products instead of something that has to be shipped in.

The number one cause of methane emissions in the United States is our wetlands. Wetlands produce 30% of the total methane emissions, fossil fuels produce 20%, waste/landfills produce 11%, natural sources like wildfires produce 9%, bio fuel produces 3%, 3% comes from other sources, and 24% comes from all the aspects of agriculture. Dairy is agriculture, but so are almond farms.

Starbucks says they produce 838,000 tons of solid waste per year, and they aren't coming up with a real solution to that, while dairy farmers are constantly trying to reduce their environmental impact. Dairy cattle also reduce waste by eating discarded food from the human food industry and upcycling it into nutritious products like milk and meat.

Dairies are constantly trying to become better environmental stewards. We as farmers are striving to reduce the methane emission of our dairy cattle through things like feed additives, selective breeding, vaccines, and technology such as methane digesters. Methane digesters, for example, can convert methane from cow manure into energy that can power homes. One solution Starbucks could help with, if they truly want to reduce the environmental impact of dairy, is using the extra money they charge for drinks made with nut juice to help fund more methane digesters on dairy farms.

So how about instead of getting rid of dairy, Starbucks uses real solutions like using local products, getting rid of drive thrus, using biodegradable plastic (which, by the way, some biodegradable plastic is made from milk!), and funding things like methane digesters? Be part of the solution. Not part of the problem.

Tomorrow we begin the process of chopping our corn crop. This year we’ll harvest 3,400 acres of corn for our cows. That’s around 60,000 tons of feed that needs to travel from field to farm. Please be patient with us and we promise to be careful and neighborly. Thanks to all of our neighbors, friends and family.

Northridge Dairy and Locusthill Dairy are both looking to add a mechanic to our team. As many of you know we operate two separate dairy farms under one company. We have a wonderful team of very experienced and dedicated members who we proudly employ. Come be a part team. This position calls for about 50-60 hours a week. Experience is flexible. Pay is competitive and negotiable based on experience. Positive attitude and strong work ethic is a must. We get busy and it gets intense during our cropping season. Whether your looking to gain experience turning wrenches or your looking to stretch your experiences into agriculture, we offer all kinds of opportunities and exciting experiences to be a part of. Benefits included. Please contact Brian Muto 315-778-8356 or message me with interest and questions. Thanks 🙏🏼

Another dairy barn near completion... took the kids today to show them the progress. Thanks to the hardest team of employees I know, we should have cows in the barn by the end of the week. 🤞🏼🎉
Last year I wrote a letter to the editor of Progressive Dairyman Magazine. I was deleted to open up this July issue and see my son Carter and a short quote written inside.
