Grace and Ranger grazing the pasture together. We’re getting the fencing re-done on one of our smaller pastures so these guys can hang out together all day. So important as we come into fire season here in Southern California. Liesl Schwoebel I believe you have always been such an advocate for this. I thought of you when they mentioned this readiness test. A really good way to see how prepared we all are.

As news broke yesterday of vegetation fires in our area, we watched as many of our neighbors, including the equine community prepared for the possibility of mandatory evacuation and officials prepared us for the possibility of the fires spreading to over 700 acres.

In fact, at 5:21pm a mandatory evacuation alert did go out to an area of ranches in our valley before later being downgraded to a warning. While 200 acres were burned in the incident and several neighbors were certainly impacted by the event, thanks to the tremendous efforts of many, including firefighters and air support, the results were not nearly as devastating as they could have been.

Yesterday, our valley had an opportunity to prepare for disaster. Many horse owners found themselves well equipped to evacuate and even to help others in the equine community as those requests went out over social media. But for some, it was an important reminder of ways they could improve emergency plans for both themselves and their animals.

In his book Horses of the Storm: The Incredible Rescue of Katrina's Horses, written in 2008 to chronicle the animal rescue response following the Hurricane Katrina disaster, Alamo Pintado team member, Ky Mortensen, offered a Readiness Quiz.

The simple questions help us assess where we are in regard to being truly prepared should disaster strike. Ky tells us to start by asking ourselves a few basic things to see how we currently measure up.

I have a written emergency plan for my animals.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

My emergency plan has options for different types of emergencies and differing time periods of advanced warning.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

I have a backup plan for my animals in the event that I am out of town when a disaster strikes.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

All of my horses can be loaded into a trailer quickly and calmly.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

I own or have access to the necessary truck, trailer, and driver for all of my horses to be transported out of the area quickly and safely.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

The truck and trailer used to haul my horses are in good working order, and I maintain an adequate supply of fuel for any type of evacuation.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

I can quickly equip all of my horses with breakaway halters and identification tags.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

I have photos of my horses, as well as other proof-of-ownership identification.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

My horses are vaccinated and up-to-date on Coggins and health papers. The vaccinations include tetanus.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

Copies of these vaccinations and negative Coggins reports are stored in my emergency kit.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

I know where I will go in the event of an emergency, and I have evacuation maps.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

I have given a copy of my plan and contact information to a friend based far away from me.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

I have a cell phone and the means to keep it fully charged.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

I have put together an evacuation kit with supplies, water, and feed for three days for my horses.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

If I cannot take all my horses, I have prioritized the ones to take and have something to mark identification on the others.
[ ] Yes [ ] No

Ky tells us to weigh our "Yes" responses with our "No" responses in order to find a good starting point from which to move forward in order to be adequately prepared for a catastrophic situation. He also encourages horse owners to address areas needing improvement while time and the resources to prepare are abundant.

In closing, we are so very grateful for first responders and the sacrifices they make every day to serve and protect us all.

Very impressed with the evacuations process at Del Mar Fairgrounds. What you are looking at are stalls bedded and waiting with fresh water and hay for any evacuated horse (or pig, goat, sheep...) that may need a temporary home. And I am so incredibly moved by the many many volunteers who donated their time over night to stand in the cold and be ready to help with anything. I helped because I know how scary evacuating horses can be. I have run from flames with horses in hand. My heart breaks with how many people had to move their horses, frantically, in the middle of the night in these firestorms. But it heals with the warmth of gratitude for an amazing horse community. So proud to be a part of this industry. @lechevalsporthorses I am so grateful we went and helped last night. Giving back to the community that helped us not two months ago. ❤️ #lilacfire #californiafires #delmarracetrack #evacuatedhorses #volunteersrock #besafe #horsecommunity #horsetrainerlife

There isn’t a way to easily explain the devastation and heartbreak that was experienced yesterday by all at Orange Park Acres and Peacock Hill Equestrian Center at Irvine Park, because of the Canyon Fire 2. I hold a special place in my heart for Peacock because it just recently became a new home...

Did you know the mechanical hot walker was invented by Terence C. Profughi and patent in 1972?? It was designed to cool down race horses after a hard exercise or race. It took the place of grooms who would normally have to walk those same horses individually for an hour or so to accomplish the same "cooling down" period. In this day and age, many equestrians use the mechanical hot walker for the same use or in or case to allow the horses to stretch those legs when all or arenas are locked up from the rain! #factoftheday #didyouknow #hotwalker #horses #training #leahyridingacademy #trainerslife
