Had a great time Saturday with a few surprises!

Mite washes were a mix: 5 vs 25+ 😱

The queenless hive was not queenless, but we did start a brood break to initiate our integrated pest management plan for varroa. 👋

The queenright hive is showing signs they are ready for a new queen, so Thursday we will pull a small split to start a re-queening process varroa IPM as well.

I’ll link below some varroa management resources on this post. Hope you can join us on Thursday!

Wishing I was joining in all the fun at the first market of Kearny County Farmer's Market - it's always the best time, hope everyone has a great time kicking off the season. Head that way on Saturday morning- and if you have an itch to sell your handmade, homegrown items just take the leap!

If you are interested in learning about beekeeping this year come join in any of the Open Teaching Apiary events at Plains MakerSpace. I've enjoyed our last two events, the bees have enjoyed their new location and are thriving- can't get much better than that!

OTA event for SW KS! Turns out May started on a Friday- this is the second Thursday of the month, not the third. So our next open teaching apiary event will be on 5/21 at 6 pm at Great Plains MakerSpace in Garden City!

You don’t have to be a member of GPMS to attend, but register online with them. I can send you the link!

Edited to correct OTA session date!

OurGreat Plains MakerSpaceiary (OTA) at Great Plains MakerSpace was a wonderful time- we went through both hives, discussed smokers and swarm traps. It was great seeing familiar and new faces! Another OTA is scheduled for next Thursday 5/22 at 6, please register with GPMS and the Great Plains Master Beekeeping program to ensure both of these organizations know you are there! Message me for links if you need!

Oh man, what a week. Sunday we brought home Wendy and her calf. It was quite the ordeal as she is quite a good mother and was very eager to be reunited with her boy! She’s skittish, spent the first couple days protesting in the tall tan remnants in the pasture which she blends into a little too well. But she has made her way up to the water and hay pile- doesn’t run away right away, but saunters off after a bit to let us know who’s running the show. She is staying inside her fence though, so we know who’s running the show too!

Got notice on the nucs so I’ll be in touch this week about pick up schedule next week! If we can make it through third winter we can make it though anything!
