I helped to relocate some bumblebees last month- still not sure of the success, but this would have been helpful!

Once you learn how to recognize a bumble bee, you may wonder whether you are encountering a queen, female worker, or a male bumble bee. With a little practice, you can learn to tell them apart!

Got to host a great group of students today- sharing bees with others is my favorite. Having someone remind you of how remarkable, beautiful, and cool these creatures are is priceless, and sometimes much needed! 🤗🐝

Open Teaching Apiary is this Saturday at 10! I introduced new queens a few weeks ago, one has been marked while the other was a bit more shy. Both had capped brood though! Let me know what topics specifically would be helpful to cover- I plan on a follow up mite wash demonstration to be sure our brood break and treatments were a success.

Farmers Market day! It’s a slow trickle from the girls but we got some to share with you all! I found out my new phone’s camera is a little trickier to see the refractometer with, but we got it done and had good results. Hope to see you this morning!

I feel like every year it’s a post about how it’s a weird year, struggle year, rebuild year…. And I wish, I really wish this was a different kind of year. Turns out there are always struggles, rebuilding, and weirdness. The build up for the hives didn’t go as fast or strong as usual, flowers I anticipated are yet to arrive, and life outside of beekeeping has been its fun. All is well, everything comes in its own time.

Requeening has been one of those struggles, finally broke down and ordered a few, thankfully before 107° hit the thermometer. Shipping queens always feels too stressful, but waiting for queens to start laying is also stressful. Farmers market on Saturday! Hopefully the next yard has more to offer 🫣

OTA event for SW KS! Turns out May started on a Friday- this is the second Thursday of the month, not the third. So our next open teaching apiary event will be on 5/21 at 6 pm at Great Plains MakerSpace in Garden City!

You don’t have to be a member of GPMS to attend, but register online with them. I can send you the link!
