Haven’t done a donkey update in a while.

Matlock and Bella are doing great. Still working on getting comfortable with human affection.

During the eclipse we had lots of new people and they were really great about taking carrots and treats from everyone.

Today we went over and Matlock kept leaning into me so I worked to slowly pet and scratch him. He finally let me give him a good full body scratch and then snuggled me for a bit. To say I am excited is an understatement.

February Farm wrap up.

Well it was a crazy busy month on the farm.

The goat babies are growing like crazy and going through lots of bottles.

It’s officially the beginning of chick season so of course we have two brooders going with babies. We have gotten cinnamon queens, sapphire gems, speckled Sussex, polish crested, and many others

We added a new farm skill to our resume. Pulling fence. With the help of a gas powered t post drive. Lots of blood, sweat, and tears and maybe a few expletives we managed to get the fence up for the bucklings to have their own bachelor pad.

Last and possibly the biggest update is the addition of the two new donkeys to the farm. Bella and Matlock came to us Wednesday and are adjusting really well. They are both underweight so they are getting lots of treats and love.

Farm days come with lots of little tasks you might not think about.

Today we trimmed hooves on most of the herd. This means we round up each of the 15 ladies and put them on the milk stand. I then check each hoof for injury, stuck rocks, or cracks. Finally with the snips or the grinder I trim each hoof overgrowth and make sure it is perpendicular to the hair growth. Once a goat is done we mark them with a green wax mark stick.

Hoof trimming happens about every 6-8 weeks. Sometimes we need to do it more often when they have extra alfalfa in their diet or when they have a crack.

One of the big reasons I wanted a farm was so my kids could see what goes into the food that we eat. Not just their feed but the time and care and effort it takes to bring food to the table.

Today we begun processing the 4h chickens our son had for his show project this year. He ended up with about 55 birds that we have grown to a reasonably large size.

With the help of a friends, a yard bird feather plucker, and lots of practice we made it through a good chuck of the birds today. Tomorrow we will finish the rest. This was my first time processing birds and I have learned so much. I hope by tomorrow I will have the confidence to do the whole process start to finish on my own.
