Crushed Grape Chronicles- from Dirt to Glass Join us as our Story takes us around the world Discovering Wine Country. The Philosophies

Making wine and growing grapes can be done in many ways.

We share the stories of the wines, the Winemakers, and the wine regions with Video Interviews, Wine and food pairings, Recipes, and Wine Education videos. Each vineyard, each winery, each winemaker may choose a different way, or a different mix of philosophies. There are Biodynamic Wineries that I love, as well as winemakers who think Biodynamics is a whole lot of hooey, whose wines and practices

I support. I have had some truly spectacular wines fermented with native yeast as well as transportive experiences with wines that inoculated with yeast. So we are not jumping on any bandwagons here to support specific philosophies, rather finding good wines made by good people who sincerely believe in their growing and winemaking practices. Here in “The Philosophies” we will explore the many and varied methods that vineyards and wineries use, which make so many wonderful and unique wines all over the globe.

This month, our wine writers group focused on Sparkling Wines from Italy, led by Jennifer from Vino Travels!
I pulled out a bottle of Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore from Bellenda and paired it with cheesy polenta topped with roasted beech mushrooms and a tarragon-basil-lemon pesto!

When David said the topic for this month's Wine Pairing Weekend post was Green Wines, I knew I was in.
Michael and I have been working on a documentary called "Can Wine Save the Planet". It features sustainable and regenerative vineyards that are leading the way in this better way of farming.
We chose wines from two of the vineyards that will be in the film, a Chardonnay from Beckmen Vineyards in Santa Barbara and a Grenache from Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles.
To pair, we chose: Caprese; Seared Scallops on mint-pea puree; Orecchiette in brown butter, lemon, tarragon, and thyme with a gremolata; and Rib-eye steaks in Montreal seasoning.
Read on for the details and recipes!

Last weekend we had the opportunity to attend The Rhône Rangers Experience 2026, in Paso Robles.
The region is beautiful, with vineyards and rolling hills, green like worn velvet, as they roll toward the coast.
We took the opportunity to visit the coast and enjoy dinner and sunset at Moonstone Beach, then spent a day engulfed in the magic of Rhône-style wines at the Experience, and rounded out the weekend with a fabulous bud break shoot at the stunning Tablas Creek Vineyard.

Weekends can sometimes be filled with great joy, beauty, and delicious food and wine. When that happens, you really want to share them. Here is our "mid-week" weekend, seeing the Superbloom in Death Valley and creating a delicious pairing with a Susumaniello from Puglia!

Last weekend, we visited Death Valley's Superbloom and then made delicious pairings from Puglia, Italy to go with a Susumaniello wine.

Valtenisi a Wine region of Rose in Italy

Valtènesi
Located in Northern Italy, the region hugs the western shore of Lake Garda on the Lombardia side.
Lake Garda is the largest freshwater lake in Italy.
Formed by shifting tectonic plates and glaciers migrating south, the lake is 346 meters at its deepest point and spans 370 square kilometers.
From north to south, it runs 52 kilometers and is 17 kilometers at its widest point.
Its edges wash ashore in Veneto to the southeast, Trentino-Alto Adige to the northeast, and Lombardia to the west.
This large body of water deeply affects the climate of the region.

It sits in a place so far inland, that the climate would typically be continental, cold in the winter, hot in the summer.
But here, this expansive body of water helps moderate the climate, making winter not as cold and summer not as hot.
Valtenèsi is known for the indigenous grape Gropello that they make into a rosé-style wine they call Chiaretto.
Gropello is the primary grape, but it may be blended with Marzemino, Barbera, and/or Sangiovese.

A Quartet of Barolos from G.D. Vajra paired with a Warm Duck Salad.

It's summer, and perhaps not the perfect weather for enjoying Barolo. Still, these from G.D. Vajra are elegant and paired beautifully with a salad with a bed of arugula topped with seared duck breast, roasted green beans, and radishes, and fennel, fresh orange segments, plum slices, blue cheese, hazelnuts, and a berry and orange vinaigrette!

Learn about these wines and get the recipe at the link!

We tasted through 4 amazing Barolos from G.D. Vajra and paired them with a warm duck salad with citrus, blue cheese and plum.
