“Planting Seeds Of Remembrance”

Marking the second year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, Burnside students planted flowers today in remembrance of his life and the lives of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Elijah Mc Clain, Laquan Mc Donald, Sandra Bland, Botham Jean, Emmett Till, Tamir Rice, and Travon Martin. In 2021 my amazing crew and I embellished ten outdoor planters
with mosaic art designed specifically to remember these Black Americans who lost their lives prematurely due to injustices in our society. This participatory community project is ongoing. Each spring, Burnside students and staff members will replenish, reseed and revive the planters while the ten Black owned businesses that have adopted them will water and nourish the plants.

Thank you Principal Thigpen for entrusting me with your vision and supporting me in my mission to extend the idea of civic engagement by expanding the purpose of art beyond its typical intent.

Title: Where Two Or More Are Gathered -2021

I was commissioned by Covenant United Church of Christ in 2017 to design and created 50 stained glass mosaic windows.

The Pastor: I would like you to do our stained glass windows.
Me: I don’t do stained glass windows.
The Pastor: I’ve seen your work. You can do anything…
Me: 🥴🤦🏽‍♀️

As a self- taught artist,
developing a process for creating these stained glass mosaic windows has been my most intimidating endeavor as of yet. This five-year-in-the-making project took much longer than anticipated (3 years of work plus 2 years of Covid-19 ). The Creator works in a unique time zone that always supersedes our mere understanding. The process stretched me, called forth amazing partnerships and often caused me to respond out load to the doubtful self talk taking place in my head. The journey fed my soul and became a refuge during my recovery from a health challenge while also provided light at the end of the dark pandemic tunnel. I am humbled to witness what Spirit created through my two hands.

Thank you Rev. Dr. Ozzie E. Smith Jr. for being the visionary that you are. Your patient and never wavering anticipation of a happy ending has taught me more about faith than you will ever know. You trusted me to create a work of art that will provide sanctuary for theological reflection at CUCC long after we are gone….

It was such a joy to work with this beautiful young Sista and to introduce her to mosaics. Zorhia Allen is an extraordinary painter and she will complete the painted portion of our mural collaboration in the next few days.

Thank you to the WARE Collective for trusting me with your vision and your willingness to journey into the unknown. Your generosity and hospitality was beyond amazing and the people of St Elizabeth are the most gracious I’ve met in a very long time.

I haven’t worked this hard in years but I loved every minute of it… the sound of cracking tile and the feel of freshly mixed grout along with the pop-in visits from lizards & crabs, the ride in the back of the pickup truck, my new found friends Ying and Yang (two goats), the crazy commutes with my speed demon drivers on “the wrong side of the road”, and all of my hilarious Jamaican Patwa interpreters! I even enjoyed the extra day I spent stranded due to the storm.

All a part of an exciting adventure. My Spirit needed it !

Waking up in Jamaica with pure Gratitude and Thankfulness for the opportunity to work with the WARE Collective and the beautiful sisters and brothers of St Elizabeth Jamaica.

Their mission to tell their stories and preserve their heritage is definitely aligned with my mission as a public artist. I’m thrilled to work with on this inter generational collaboration.

Much Love and Thanks to all of my Family and Friends who have donated to this project… I Love Y’all ❤️ Stay tuned….The cracking of tile is about to begin!
