🌮 Birria in a pinch: Does the shortcut work?
My honest verdict? Yes—with some caveats.
I tried a slow-cooker birria-style beef recipe using Better Goods birria seasoning and Better Than Bouillon birria base. The result was pleasant, mildly seasoned, and convenient. It delivered a recognizable birria-inspired flavor without the time and effort of preparing a homemade chile sauce.
But I'm going to be honest: if you've made birria from scratch with toasted and rehydrated dried chiles, fresh aromatics, and layers of smoky, earthy flavor, this isn't going to replace that experience. Homemade wins for me, hands down.
That doesn't mean this shortcut has no place in the kitchen. If you enjoy milder Mexican-inspired flavors, prefer less heat and smokiness, or simply want a convenient slow-cooker dinner without building a sauce from scratch, this may be worth trying.
My biggest takeaway? It works in a pinch, but I'd personally build on it with additional layers of flavor next time. I can also see the birria base being more useful as an addition to a homemade chile sauce than as the foundation of the entire dish.
Bottom line: Pleasant, convenient, and mild. Not a replacement for my homemade birria, but potentially a useful shortcut or layer.
And around here, we're all for being honest about what's worth the effort—and what gets dinner on the table when life is busy. ❤️
