Thatโ€™s not exactly true.

Honey bees actually cannot properly digest raw pollen on its own.

Before it becomes usable foodโ€ฆ the colony has to transform it.

Bee bread is fermented pollen.

Itโ€™s one of the most important protein sources in the entire hive and without it, colonies cannot properly raise brood.

Worker bees collect flower pollen and pack it into pollen baskets on their hind legs
โ€ข Back at the hive, the pollen is mixed with nectar, honey, and digestive enzymes from the bees
โ€ข The mixture is tightly packed into comb cells
โ€ข Beneficial bacteria and yeast begin a lactic acid fermentation process
โ€ข Over time, the tough outer shell of the pollen breaks down, making nutrients available to the colony

This is important because raw pollen has an extremely tough outer shell called the exine.

Adult bees cannot easily digest it in raw form.

The fermentation process acts almost like an outside digestive system for the colony.

It unlocks:
โ€ข Proteins
โ€ข Amino acids
โ€ข Vitamins
โ€ข Fats
โ€ข Nutrients needed for brood production

The result is bee bread.

Stable. Preserved. Digestible. Nutrient dense.

Very similar in concept to fermented foods humans make like sauerkraut or silage.

Mostly developing larvae and nurse bees.
โ€ข Days 1 to 3, larvae are fed royal jelly
โ€ข After that, nurse bees begin feeding developing brood with food made largely from bee bread

Nurse bees between roughly 6 to 12 days old consume massive amounts of it.

Why?

Because they use those proteins and nutrients to produce brood food and royal jelly for the next generation of bees.

Older forager bees rely more heavily on nectar and honey for quick energy, but may still consume small amounts during stressful or high-demand periods.

๐—ช๐—ต๐˜† ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€
Colonies explode in population during spring because of protein availability.

No proteinโ€ฆ No brood expansion.
No brood expansionโ€ฆ No large workforce for nectar flows.

Honey gets most of the attention. But protein is what builds bees.

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป
The hive understands something many people forget.

Growth requires more than energy.

It requires nutrition.

Honey fuels the work. Bee bread builds the future.

Hereโ€™s an oldie, but goodie. This video shows my girls helping me put mating nucs together.

05/22/2026

This was my queen-rearing setup a few years back. Iโ€™ve decided to sell my mini mating nucs. I didnโ€™t use them last year because we were packing. Iโ€™m not using them this year because we are building. Being realistic, if I use them next year, then Iโ€™m not going to have time to garden like I want to. If youโ€™ve been wanting to get into queen rearing, hereโ€™s your opportunity. Iโ€™m asking $20 apiece. Theyโ€™re already painted, although a few have had some areas of paint come off with painters tape.

Moving nucs in the rain may not be the most enjoyable way to do it, but at least it ensures that most of the foragers are in the box.

Another day, another cutout with Mike. Isnโ€™t this hive a beauty?

05/15/2026

Mike Williams and I did another cutout today ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ˜. The combs were really long, so he broke out a new board trick that I hadnโ€™t seen done before. Worked like a charm! We got most of the bees and the queen. However, when Mike tried to access the crawl space he was greeted by a copperhead snake ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. Thatโ€™s a nope rope. So a few of the bees that we couldnโ€™t vacuum up via the hole cut in the wall got to stay, at least for today. To be continued another day.

Today Mike Williams and I tag teamed a cutout. I think I prefer being someoneโ€™s second on a cutout instead of being the point person or doing one solo.

My partner in crime is helping me wire empty frames. These will make putting brood comb from cutouts into frames much easier. Just lay the comb on the wires, then rubber band it in place. Over time the bees propolize the pieces of comb in place and drag broken rubber bands out the front entrance of the hive. Bees are neat freaks.
