Some of the greatest blessings in life come from the most unexpected places. And sometimes, they start with something as simple as raw milk.

When we first became part of The Granary Whole Foods, Inc. family, we never imagined just how much these people would come to mean to us.

The Granary is so much more than a store. It’s filled with some of the most wonderful, genuine people you’ll ever have the pleasure of knowing. People who don’t just support small businesses, but genuinely care about the families behind them.

And then there’s this beautiful soul right here. ❤️

Somewhere along the way, she decided we were hers. She adopted us, our children, and our little farm family as if we’d belonged to her all along.

And I can’t even begin to tell you what that means to us.

She’s genuine. She’s loyal. She’s kind. She’s strong. She loves wholeheartedly, and she has a way of making people feel like they matter.

She’s everything I imagine when I read about the Proverbs 31 woman.

A woman whose worth is far above rubies. A woman clothed in strength and dignity. A woman who opens her mouth with wisdom and has the law of kindness on her tongue.

And I’ll tell you something else…

If there’s anyone I want to be like when I grow up, it’s her. ❤️

Not because of what she has, but because of who she is. Because of the way she loves people. Because of her character. Because her kindness isn’t something she puts on for the world to see. It’s simply who she is.

You can’t fake that kind of heart.

We are so incredibly blessed that God allowed our paths to cross. What started as a business relationship has become something so much more meaningful. A friendship. A family. A blessing we never saw coming.

And to think…

It all started because of raw milk. 🥹

To everyone at The Granary Whole Foods, thank you for being such a wonderful part of our Cowford family. And to this precious lady, thank you for loving us and our girls the way you do.

I messed up!!!
I forgot to share that we dropped at Pridgen Farm Supply!
We have been playing catch up since I was out for 4 days and some things have just slipped through the cracks. Whoops!

Mama’s, you know how this goes! Can I get an amen!? 🤪

Do you feel like everything falls apart when you’re not on top of it? lol Don’t get me wrong, the fam did a banger job at taking over. But it’s not always “exactly” up to us mom’s expectations and then we have to go back and do it all over again. 🤣🤣🤣 oh, just me? Surely can’t be!

What a blessing it is to live in this country, surrounded by amazing people, cows in fields, the cool air blowing in, which means air in our lungs and good health! 🙌🏼

We secretly snuck into Russell's Feed and Farm and y’all sneaky little stinkers CAUGHT US and sold out immediately! So now that I now know all of our customers are professional FBI agents and your hounds can sniff us out no matter where we’re at, we can finally say “You got us!”
Plus, we’re bringing in flavors today!

And also, because it’s Monday, we are also unloading lots of goodies at Roosters General Store! Like, right NOW!

What the science actually says about Lactoferrin.

Lactoferrin is one of the most fascinating bioactive proteins found in milk, particularly colostrum and raw milk. And there's legitimate science behind its benefits.

But there is also a difference between what lactoferrin does in laboratory experiments, what it does inside the body, and what they confidently claim it does for the health.

What is lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a naturally occurring, iron-binding glycoprotein found in:
•Human breast milk
•Cow's milk and colostrum
•Tears, saliva, mucus, and other protective secretions
•Neutrophils, which are immune cells

It’s mostly known for fighting infections.
Its primary biological roles involve iron regulation, immune defense, and protection of mucosal surfaces, including the intestinal tract.

Six important properties
1. Antimicrobial activity
Lactoferrin binds iron, making some of it less available to bacteria that require iron to multiply. It can also interact directly with certain microbes.

2. Antiviral activity
Laboratory studies show lactoferrin can interfere with the attachment or entry of certain viruses into cells.

3. Gut protection
Lactoferrin interacts with intestinal cells, immune signaling pathways, and the gut microbiome. Some clinical studies suggest benefits in particular gastrointestinal conditions.

4. Anti-inflammatory effects
Lactoferrin can influence inflammatory signaling. Importantly, it is an immunomodulator, meaning it can regulate immune activity rather than simply suppressing it.

5. Iron metabolism
Because lactoferrin binds iron, researchers have investigated it for iron deficiency and anemia, including during pregnancy. Some studies report improved iron markers or tolerability compared with conventional iron supplements, although evidence varies.

6. Infant immune development
Lactoferrin is especially abundant in human colostrum and contributes to the complex immune-protective environment.

•Lactoferrin is heat-sensitive.
•Pasteurization can cause greater structural changes and loss of proteins and enzymes.

It’s gonna take a lot to stop me 🤣 Until I’m in the grave I guess. lol

Some of yall know I had a cosmetic procedure done some odd weeks back. Well, this past weekend, it resulted in me having a pulmonary embolism.

I went into the ER just to get checked,… and found that I wasn’t leaving. I was getting admitted.

Anyways, lonnnng story short, I got home last night and I couldn’t be more ready to get back to what I love!

(Thanks to so many friends who jumped in to help! I literally cried in the hospital being so full of gratitude. Especially as my husband was out of state!)

What Does That Jar of Milk Actually Pay For?

We occasionally hear conversations about the price of farm direct milk.

From the outside looking in, it can be easy to assume that the cost of a jar of milk simply covers the milk inside of it.

After all, the cow eats grass, we milk her, put it in a jar, and sell it… right? ❤️

In reality, maintaining a healthy herd, operating a farm, and choosing to do things the way we do involves so much more.

Along with the daily care of every cow, the price of each jar helps cover:

• The food, and lots of it! Hay, alfalfa, etc.
• The equipment, fuel, and time involved when we produce our own
• Pasture and fencing maintenance
• Minerals, vitamins, supplements, and proper nutrition for our herd
• Routine health and disease testing
• Routine hoof trimming
• AI tech visits
• Veterinary care
• Milking equipment and/or replacement parts
• Buckets and all the little pieces that somehow always need replacing
• Daily filters and cleaning supplies
• Equipment needed to rapidly chill the milk after milking
• Refrigerators, freezers, coolers, and electricity to keep everything properly cold
• Glass jars
• Bottles
• Lids and caps
• Custom labels
• Printing costs
• Washing, sanitizing, and cleaning supplies
• Water and electricity, water lines & auto waterers in every paddock (they can freeze and bust, especially in the winter)
• Farm equipment, fuel, maintenance, and repairs
• Business licenses, permits, testing, and insurance
• Coolers, ice, tables, displays, and everything required for markets and deliveries
• Fuel and time spent making weekly deliveries
• Organic ingredients used in our specialty products like chocolate, maple, pumpkin, cookies, breads, and more
• And, of course, the countless hours spent feeding, milking, cleaning, washing, bottling, labeling, loading, delivering, planning/preparing, marketing, communication and starting all over again the next day.

And that list could keep going.

So a 5, 10, or 15 dollar jar of milk isn’t simply 5, 10 or $15 worth of milk.

It helps support the cow that produced it, the land that feeds her, the equipment that’s needed to milk her, the testing that helps us monitor our herd, the jar that holds it, the label wrapped around it, the refrigeration that keeps it cold, and the family doing the work behind it all.

Cows don’t take weekends off.

They don’t know it’s Christmas morning.

They don’t care if it’s pouring rain, hurricane, 98 degrees, 20 degrees or if we just had surgery.

They still need to be fed.

They still need to be cared for.

And they still need to be milked… every single day. And twice a day for a lot of us!

Choosing organic practices adds another layer of stressors. Organic/non GMO costs are undeniably astronomical. They can be harder to source. Sometimes we have to drive farther, order larger quantities, or produce things ourselves because what we want simply isn’t available locally.

Most just see the beautiful glass jar, the label, the bottle, the cooler full of ice.

Behind those things are hundreds of expenses and thousands of hours.

So when you purchase a jar from a small farm, you’re not simply paying for what’s inside the container.

You’re supporting the animals, the land, the equipment, the standards, the choices, and the enormous amount of behind the scenes work required to produce it.

The Granary Whole Foods, Inc. tomorrow at 12:00pm! All this rain is reminding us of 2022, when our front hay field was under water! Clearly we are trying to compete with 2022 🤣 We have gotten a lot of water this week, but I’m not complaining! Especially through our 2026 100 year drought! I’m surprised we’ve not had a single tropical storm or hurricane! Hopefully no sinkholes commence.
