The firsts of this years garden. I see SO many cucumbers, SO many Zucchini’s, SO many crooknecks, tomatoes are starting to fruit too. One weird thing I noticed was a few ripe blackberries. On my property at least they have always been ready the end of summer. I guess this weird hot wet summer is doing something.

Anyways here comes some picked quail eggs and SO much zucchini bread lol.

New layer colors! The “starlight” green layers are starting to lay and my Ameraucanas are starting to lay. In this pictureI have one very very light blue egg from my Opal legbars, one deeper blue from the Ameraucana, a white from an Andalusian blue for reference, starlight egger green egg and 2 maran eggs. Can anyone tell what blue egg is what?! Its subtle but also so noticeable especially in person.

Lots of fruit coming up! I love this part of the season. Micro orchard was planted last year from all semi dwarf bareroot trees. When I was researching there wasn’t much information on how to cultivate a micro orchard so I winged it. All of my trees are planted decently close and pruned to stay currently 4 foot until they will reach the max size I want them to be roughly 5-6ft. I prune them twice a year. The end of August and in the dead of winter.

So far our gala apple tree is producing fruit, Fuji apple tree has a few and one of our beauty plums. Our Asian pears seem to be still growing so nothing from them this year.

We do have a few mature trees that came with the property that are thriving. A normal pear tree and two wild plums. Two different varieties and they are DELICIOUS. I unfortunately was over run with chores, life and the 20lbs of strawberries we’ve already harvested and not even close to being done that I missed the cherries lol.

And to wrap things up our baby blue berries are producing (I ate all the ripe ones already in that picture 🫢)

On top of that 35 chickens are always laying, we culled a few male quails to even out the flock, rabbit kits are to be weaned on the 7th and processed at the end of july. They are already HUGE lol. This summer has been pretty cool so I decided I will be breeding my other does soon instead of waiting out summer. Meat chickens are looking good.

And over all I am so grateful that my chaos is literally the ability to feed my family and cultivating that.

And meat birds again! I’ve been patiently waiting for 2 weeks hoping no one would buy them lol got 12 on sale from 4.99 ...

Last week got away from me but catching up with weeding and pruning. Im so surprised to see theres already crookneck, zucchini and cucumbers growing. Harvested our test garlic patch (roughly 20 good sized cloves but will do more next year.). Im SO behind on weeating and mowing its insane what one week can do.

Whats the rule? When you bulk buy something your children love all of a sudden they will never eat it again? I spent a fortune in strawberries last year and now that I literally have them growing out of my ears they will not eat them. 🙃 thats ok jams and smoothies coming up. 6 bags in the freezer and I haven’t brought myself to battle the heat to pick whats ripe today.

On a lighter note lol these guys aren’t mine, I’m temporarily brooding them for a friend until she makes room. But look at this tough little thing. I was making sure for the 10th time they knew where their water was (I heard baby turkeys have 0 survival instincts) and this little thing squared up.

To keep full transparency and hopefully help someone learn from my mistakes and from my experiences on the farm, life here is not always positive.

We recently suffered two devastating losses of kits that I believe were due to my own negligence. I did not think rats would be willing to physically drag not one but two kits from a nest. My hutches are off the ground, so I underestimated the risk. I learned that lesson in a very hard way.

Then, on the same day, things escalated further. During one of my routine checks I noticed Oreo had not eaten his pellets. He is normally very eager for food and always the first to beg for more. When I pulled him out for a closer look, his back end was covered in stool. I will not go into graphic detail, but I strongly suspect coccidia.

I have owned rabbits for about two years and this is my first time dealing with this. From what I have learned, proper treatment often involves veterinary care, which is not an option for me right now. I am relying on information shared by other rabbit keepers in hopes of treating Oreo and, more importantly, preventing this from spreading through the rest of my colony.

(I also have Toltrazuril on the way today for him)
