April is Ape Awareness Month!

Throughout April we will learn about each of the four types of great apes: bonobos, gorillas, orangutans, and chimpanzees and ways we can help these species & preserve their habitats.

The bonobo is one of our closest relatives - right next to the chimpanzee. Bonobos and chimpanzees diverged from each other over 1 million years ago and differ significantly in behavior, emotions and cognition. They help us understand our own species evolution! #ApeAwarenessMonth #LAP

Want to help our endangered bonobo relatives? Lola ya Bonobo is an organization that provides a sanctuary for orphaned bonobos and successfully releases them back into the wild. They accept donations on their website here: https://www.lolayabonobo.org

Our animals need us & we're here every day. How can you help from home? Plan for some future fun at LAP with one of our two-for deals. A little bit can go a long way for the care of our animals!

Zoos and Aquariums have shut down all over but that doesn't mean the zookeepers don't continue to care for the animals WHILE practicing social distancing. This is an interesting read on how zoos are affected and handling these strange times.

"On Monday, the Pittsburgh Zoo’s spacious parking lot was converted into a drive-through covid-19 screening area."

Today we celebrate World Frog Day!

Let's learn about the Puerto Rican coqui (pronounced ko-kee)

Its scientific genus name - Eleutherodactylus - means “free toes” because, unlike many frogs, the coqui doesn’t have webbed feet.

Coquis have special disks, or toe pads, on their feet that allow them to climb up vertical structures and cling to trees and leaves.

Turn up your volume and listen to these Puerto Rican coquis! What does it sound like they are saying? :)

After careful consideration, we have made the very difficult decision to close our park tomorrow through March 31st.

This doesn't mean you'll stop seeing & learning about our animals - you'll be able to keep up with them right here on our page!

On April 1st we will reassess, and hopefully we'll see you again soon. Stay safe out there!

It's National Save a Spider Day! Meet Jasmine, our Curly-haired tarantula. Jasmine also happens to be celebrating her 9th birthday! Female tarantulas are slightly larger than males on average, and they also live longer. Males are known to live up to 4-5 years, while females live on average about 10 years, some do survive up to 15 under human care. Why should YOU save a spider? Spiders are invaluable to our ecosystem by controlling the numbers of bugs that can destroy plants in the wild. #SaveASpider

DAY CAMPS ADDED! Register for our Zookeeper for-a-day camp here: https://loom.ly/TwmPc6k Camp size is limited to 20 children.

*INDOOR PLAY AREAS CLOSED*

To our Community & Friends of Leesburg Animal Park

We would like to address the impact COVID-19 will have on our everyday activities at the Park:

We are staying open. We know the effect of school closures on working parents, many of us with kids of our own, and we are here to help. We have added day camps next week, Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 9-4pm in hopes to help these families looking for a fun & safe place to drop off their children.

Please follow this link to register for camp (pre-registration is REQUIRED)
https://loom.ly/TwmPc6k

We are staying clean. The cleanliness of our park and facilities has always been a priority, but we have taken extra steps to ensure the sanitization of all areas in which you or your child may come in contact. Moving forward, during our Keeper Talks there will be no contact with the animals. People will be able to see the animal and learn about them but they will be hands off. We will also try to move the talks outside (weather permitting). The outdoor petting areas will still be open for guests to pet and feed.

We are adapting. Leesburg Animal Park will still be the same eye-widening & education-filled place you know and love, but during this COVID-19 period we must make a few changes. We are closing the indoor play structure, toddler area, and discovery room. We will also require regular hand-washing breaks for all of our campers and visitors.

We want you to know, that Leesburg Animal Park is here for you during this unprecedented time. If you need a break from the media, our doors are open. Come get some fresh air, learn about some cute animals, and breathe. Our animals are guaranteed to make you smile, and we all deserve a day of smiling during this difficult time.

This community is strong, and we will get through this.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to give us a call at (703) 433-0002 or send us an email Admin[email protected].

If you're in to bald eagles, this is a really cool story. If you're not in to bald eagles, this is a really cool story. So basically, you should read it! 🦅

San Francisco Zoo officials on Monday expressed excitement over a bald eagle recently spotted in the wild in Southern California, and lauded a zoo program that helped in the recovery of the once endangered bird.
