How long can the dahlias stay out there? Longer than most people leave them.

The American Dahlia Society is clear that the tubers keep maturing while the plant grows, even after light frosts, and that the longer they stay in the ground the better they keep through winter. Dig them while the tops are still green and you are storing something unfinished.

The signal is the plant itself. Oregon State Extension times the dig to after a hard frost has killed the stalks, and the whole plant goes black. Cut the stalks then, leave the clumps in a few more days, and lift them with a fork before the soil freezes. Dry them a day out of the sun. The Society's growers mostly store them at 40 to 45 degrees in coarse vermiculite, and look them over once a month for rot.

In mild-winter gardens, Oregon State leaves them in the ground under at least four inches of mulch, as long as the bed drains well.

Black tops are the start of the job. 🌸

Adding some fall color to the lavender.
Did you know asters are native plants and pollinators love them.
There are areas in this lavender bed that hold more moisture than what the lavender likes.
Well asters are the perfect replacement! They like moisture and are in my opinion beautiful!
