IDAHO GOVERNOR BRAD LITTLE ANNOUNCES
OPPOSITION TO PROPOSITION 1
Governor Little’s statement issued on 09/27/24 on “From the Desk of the Governor”: “I am opposed to
ranked choice voting and signed House Bill 179 in 2023 banning it in Idaho. We must promote voting
practices that are clear, increase voter participation, and don’t undermine confidence in our
elections, and ranked choice voting meets none of those standards. Idahoans will make their voices
heard on Proposition 1 at the ballot box in November. As for me, I will not be supporting
Proposition 1.”
With the recent opposition from Governor Little, he joins the ranks of US Congressman Russ Fulcher,
US Senator Jim Risch, and US Senator Mike Crapo who openly oppose Proposition 1. The Nez Perce
County Republican’s have also formally opposed Proposition 1. “When you can’t win elections, you
change the way elections are ran. That is exactly the process Democrats are using in Idaho and
disguising it as a “non-partisan” issue. If Democrats were less radical and brought better ideas to
the table, they wouldn’t have to change the elections to win. Vote No on Prop 1,” said Chair Bill
Hobbs.
With the election just over a month away, Idaho Governor Brad Little issued a press release
opposing Proposition 1. Idahoans will turn out to the polls on November 5ᵗʰ to determine many local
and national elections to include a question for Proposition 1. On the ballot, Proposition 1 will
drastically change our elections to create a Rank Choice Voting scheme in the general election. If
it passes, Idahoans will have to rank each candidate in the general election from their most
favorite to least favorite for the elected office. If your most favorite candidate gets the least
number of votes, then your ballot switches to your second choice. This process continues until a
candidate has over 50% of the vote. In simple terms, Idahoans will have to vote for candidates they
do not want in office in order for their ballot to still be counted. Other concerns with Proposition
1 and the Rank Choice Voting procedure is the winner of the election might not have been anyone’s
“most favorite” candidate because they receive more second and third place votes, the additional
cost of $25-$40 million to the taxpayers, and a very confusing process without a way to audit after
the ballots are counted. This is not a process that is friendly for any voter. Please vote NO on
Proposition 1, keep elections open and honest for all - one person, one vote.
