No new YouTube video from me today because apparently all this adventuring eventually catches up with you. 😂

But if you are one of the 28,000 people who watched my recent solo camping video and haven’t watched last week’s adventure yet, this one takes us to a rustic backcountry cabin tucked along the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains. 💙

No electricity. No running water. Just what we could carry in, an old cabin in the woods, and Lake Superior right outside the door.

And this adventure has a little bit of everything... hiking, some unexpected history from my early YouTube days, Lake of the Clouds, Bonanza Falls, and plenty of moments that made me laugh while editing it.

So while I recover from my latest round of travels and get the NEXT adventure ready for you, come along on this one. 🥾🏕️

Days four & five on Isle Royale! 💙

Our fourth day was also our last full day on Mott Island, so we started it with a hike around the 3-mile Mott Loop.

And WOW. 😍

The interior of the island was absolutely gorgeous, but once we made our way out toward the outer edge, the views opened up and got even better. Lake Superior has a way of making you stop whatever you’re doing and just stare for a while. 💙

After our hike, I made a big pot of chili and we had plans for one more evening adventure. We were going to take the bigger boat out to Chippewa Harbor!

Well…Isle Royale apparently had other plans. 😂

We made it into the channel before some technical difficulties with the boat meant turning around and heading right back to the dock.

So, Plan B.

Summer Shandies, Rummikub, 80s music and a whole lot of laughing back on Mott Island. 🍻😂

Not exactly the evening we had planned, but it ended up being a pretty great way to spend our last night.

Day five arrived a little sooner than expected when the Ranger surprised us by showing up early!

We quickly gathered everything, said our goodbyes to Auntie and Uncle, and climbed aboard for the five-hour ride back to Houghton.

And this time we scored seats right at the front of the boat! 🙌

Five hours later, we pulled back into Houghton just as the rain started to fall. Apparently Lake Superior was giving us a pretty clear signal that vacation was officially over. 😂

Five days of boat rides, hiking, fishing, history, wildlife, incredible scenery, family time, a few plans that didn’t quite go according to plan, and a whole lot of laughs.

And a HUGE thank you to my aunt and uncle for hosting us on Mott Island and making this whole experience possible. 💙 Getting to stay with you, see a little bit of what life is actually like out there, and experience Isle Royale in a way most visitors never get to was incredibly special. We loved every minute of it.

I’m really grateful we got to experience Isle Royale this way.

Until next time, Isle Royale. 💙

Day three on Isle Royale! 💙

Today we took the little motorboat over to Rock Harbor, which is the main visitor hub on the northeast end of Isle Royale.

For anyone who pictures Isle Royale as nothing but backpacking and tents, Rock Harbor might surprise you! There’s a visitor center, restaurants, a store and even the Rock Harbor Lodge and housekeeping cabins for those who want to experience the island without quite so much “roughing it.” 😂

From there, we headed out on the Stoll Memorial Trail toward Scoville Point. It’s a beautiful hike with informational signs along the way, lots of Lake Superior views, and plenty of places that make you want to stop and look around.

We made it out to Scoville Point and found ourselves a spot on the rocks for lunch overlooking Lake Superior. Not a bad lunch view. 💙

On the way back, we took the other side of the loop and passed Smithwick Mine, one of the little reminders that there’s a whole lot of history tucked into this island along with all that wilderness.

Forrest has also been getting some practice driving the boat while we’re here, and he’s doing such a great job! I think he’s getting more comfortable with it every day. 🚤

Then it was back home to Mott Island for dinner, followed by a pretty great way to end Day Three: heading outside to watch the lunar eclipse. 🌙

Boat rides, hiking, lunch on the rocks, a little history and an eclipse over Isle Royale.

Yeah…I’ll take it. 💙

Day two on Isle Royale! 💙

We started the day at the boat cove on Mott Island, where I immediately got distracted by this absolute UNIT of a spider hanging out on the dock. 🕷️😂 According to my oldest, who is studying to be an entomologist, it’s a very large fishing spider. I, of course, thought it was amazing. (Look them up)

Then my aunt, Forrest and I hopped in the little boat and spent some time trolling before making our way over to Davidson Island.

And can we talk about THAT HOUSE?! 😍

I had to look up some of the history afterward because it feels so unexpected sitting out there on Isle Royale. Davidson Island was once home to the Tourist’s Home Resort, which welcomed visitors in the early 1900s. The Davidson family purchased the property in 1910 and later built the beautiful two-story summer home around 1922. Its Colonial Revival style was pretty unusual for Isle Royale, where most summer cottages were much smaller and more rustic.

We spent some time hanging out and fishing off the dock before eventually climbing back into the boat and heading home to Mott Island.

And after a day on the water? Homemade pizza for dinner. 🍕🙌

Giant spiders, fishing, boats, a gorgeous old house, Lake Superior and homemade pizza.

I’d say Day Two treated us pretty well. 😂💙

Day one on Isle Royale! 🏝️💙

Getting here is an adventure all by itself. We boarded the Ranger for the roughly five-hour trip across Lake Superior before arriving at Mott Island.

If you’ve visited Isle Royale before, you may not have ever made it to Mott Island but this is where many of the National Park Service employees who work on the island live and work, so we get to experience a little different side of Isle Royale.

After five hours on the boat, we were definitely feeling it 😂, so it was mostly about settling in, taking it easy, and wandering around to see what we can find.

So far? Beautiful views, quiet trails, and some VERY impressive spiders. 🕷️😂

Not a bad first evening.

I’m excited to share more of what life is like out here over the next few days, including some of the parts of Isle Royale most visitors never get to see. 💙

Sponsored | There’s going to the rodeo… and then there’s making a whole weekend out of it. 🤠

I spent the weekend at Seven Clans Casino Thief River Falls for Wojo’s Rodeo, and there was a LOT packed into one weekend! Rodeo action, good food, live entertainment, a little time to relax, and the best part is that once I arrived, everything was right there.

Of course, I also took full advantage of having an excuse to break out the cowboy hat. 🤠

If a rodeo weekend sounds like your kind of summer adventure, put this one on your list for next year!

Some friendships can apparently pick right back up where they left off… even 14 years later. 💙

When my friends surprised me by flying in from Iceland, I knew we needed to squeeze in an adventure together. And somehow, at exactly the right time, I managed to snag a last-minute night at Buckshot Cabin.. a rustic backcountry cabin tucked along the shores of Lake Superior in the Porcupine Mountains.

So we loaded up our packs and headed in. 🥾

What made this one extra special is that these are some of the same friends I was adventuring with when I first started sharing my life on YouTube about 14 years ago. We took an epic three-week road trip together, circled Lake Superior the following year…and then life took us in different directions for a while.

Turns out, some things don't change much. 😂

One night off-grid at the cabin, a lot of laughing and catching up, Lake Superior right outside our door—and after hiking back out, we still managed to fit in Lake of the Clouds and Bonanza Falls.

Not bad for a surprise visit. 💙

And if you'd like to come along for the whole adventure, I just uploaded the full vlog to YouTube! You'll even get a little glimpse of us adventuring together 13 years ago. 😂

🎥 Find it on Angela Joy Adventures on YouTube.

NEW ADVENTURE! 💙

What do you do when friends you haven't adventured with in YEARS suddenly show up from Iceland?

Obviously you find a last-minute backcountry cabin on Lake Superior, load up the backpacks and head into the woods. 😂

This one was pretty special. These are some of the same friends I was adventuring with when I first started sharing videos on YouTube about 14 years ago—and somehow this was our first real adventure together in a very long time.

There was hiking, an off-grid cabin, Lake Superior, a little trip down memory lane, Lake of the Clouds, Bonanza Falls... and plenty of us just being us.

The new vlog is up on YouTube! Come along with us. 👇💙
