Golden. Buttery. Vanilla-real. 🍓

This is what real vanilla looks like.

Layer after layer of Kentucky butter cake crumbles, thick vanilla custard, fresh strawberries and blueberries, and pillowy whipped cream. all tucked into one beautiful cup.

It doesn't just look like the South. It tastes like it, too.

Made from scratch. Made with real butter, real vanilla, and 40 years of love passed down from my mama.

Come grab yours at the walk-up window. 🧁

A Little Southern Food History: The Punch Bowl Cake 🍓🫐🍰

Before there were dessert cups, parfait jars, and Pinterest-worthy trifles, Southern tables had the Punch Bowl Cake.

Its exact beginning is hard to pin down, but Punch Bowl Cake became a beloved Southern tradition, closely related to the classic English trifle. Instead of worrying about perfectly frosted layers, Southern cooks layered pieces of cake with creamy pudding or custard, fruit, and whipped cream in a big glass bowl.

And why a punch bowl?

Because that beautiful glass punch bowl sitting in the cabinet wasn't just for punch. In many Southern homes, it came out for church suppers, Sunday dinners, family reunions, holidays, bridal showers, and celebrations. Filling it with layers of cake and fruit turned a simple dessert into something beautiful enough to sit right in the middle of the table.

It was the kind of dessert made for feeding a crowd—and the kind of recipe that rarely stayed exactly the same from one family to another.

Some used pineapple and cherries.
Some used strawberries or bananas.
Some used vanilla or angel food cake.
And everybody seemed to have an auntie, mama, or grandmother who made the best one. ❤️

At Sweet Things by Marcy, I'm carrying that Southern tradition forward a little differently.

My Southern Punch Bowl Cake starts with my signature Kentucky Butter Cake, then gets layered with fresh strawberries and blueberries, rich vanilla pudding, and whipped cream.

Old-school Southern dessert.
A little Marcy twist.
And a whole lot of cake. ❤️

Because some recipes aren't meant to disappear—they're meant to be passed down, dressed up, and served to the next generation.

Did your family make Punch Bowl Cake? And what did they put in theirs? Tell me in the comments. 👇🏾

The Furlough That Changed Everything
Sometimes people ask me, "Did you always dream of owning a bakery?"
The answer is...
No.
I never planned to become an entrepreneur.
After graduating from college, I built a career in federal service. I loved what I was doing and truly believed I had found the career I would eventually retire from.
Then 2020 happened.
The world changed.
COVID changed the way we lived.
My husband was diagnosed with cancer.
Family members became sick, and we experienced heartbreaking loss.
Then I received news that my agency would be furloughed.
For the second time in my life, uncertainty knocked on my door.
During that season, I needed an outlet.
I had been an avid runner, but an injury to my hip and back forced me to stop. I loved spending time in my garden, but even that became difficult.
So I started baking.
Not because I wanted to start a business.
Not because I had a business plan.
I baked because it brought me peace.
There was something therapeutic about measuring ingredients, mixing batter, and watching something beautiful come out of the oven.
For a little while, the stress faded.
Then something unexpected happened.
Friends started asking if they could buy what I was making.
Then their friends started asking.
One order became another.
And another.
Looking back, I can see that Sweet Things by Marcy wasn't born out of a business plan.
It was born during one of the most uncertain seasons of my life.
God used something as simple as butter, sugar, flour, and a mixer to show me a future I never could have imagined.
Sometimes the greatest blessings don't arrive wrapped the way we expect.
Sometimes they begin in an ordinary kitchen... on an ordinary day... when all you're trying to do is find a little peace.
❤️
