Dahlia Vase-Life Experiment — Day 2

We’re starting to see a few changes, but there still isn’t a clear winner.

Here’s how the five treatments look today:

🌸 Cold water: Overall, these flowers look the best right now. One bloom, Monoa, is starting to show a little wilting.

🌸 Hot water treatment: This group is showing the most change so far. 4 out of 5 blooms are beginning to wilt toward the back of the flower.

🌸 Chrysal flower food: 1 flower is showing some wilting in the back.

🌸 Quick Dip: 1 flower is beginning to wilt in the back.

🌸 Daily water change: 1 flower is also showing some wilting in the back.

So at the end of Day 2, nearly every vase is showing at least some sign of aging, but none of the treatments has separated itself enough for me to say we have a definite winner or loseryet.

The plain tap water vase looks slightly better overall, while the hot water group is showing the most wilting at this point.

We’ll see what Day 3 brings! 🌸

This morning’s dahlia harvest. 🤍

Dahlia Vase-Life Experiment — Day 1

So far, no clear winner.

After 24 hours, all five groups still look healthy, vibrant, and fresh, with no noticeable difference between the treatments yet.

That means our contenders are still:
🌸 180°F hot-water treatment, then cool water
🌸 Quick Dip, then cool tap water
🌸 Plain tap water
🌸 Plain tap water changed daily
🌸 Water with Crystal flower food

I’ll keep photographing them each day and watching for the first signs of fading, wilting, petal drop, or other differences.

Day 1 verdict: it’s still anyone’s game.

One of the things I love most about being a Penn State Master Gardener is that we learn and share science-based information backed by research. It has definitely made me want to experiment more in my own flower fields.

Today, I started a little dahlia vase life experiment. Dahlias are absolutely beautiful, but their relatively short vase life, often only 3–5 days, is one of their biggest drawbacks as a cut flower.

This morning I cut numerous dahlias at different stages of bloom and divided them among five different treatments:

🌸 Hot water treatment: Stems were placed in water heated to 180°F for one hour, then transferred to cool water.

🌸 Quick Dip: Fresh-cut stems were placed in Quick Dip for 3 seconds, then immediately placed into cool tap water.

🌸 Plain tap water: No special treatment.

🌸 Floral food: Water mixed with Chrystal flower food. The water will be completely changed every day.

🌸 Floral food: Water mixed with Crystl flower food.

Now I’m going to photograph them every day and track how each group holds up to see which treatment gives me the longest dahlia vase life.

Because beautiful flowers are wonderful but beautiful flowers that last longer are even better.

Some moments deserve flowers. Others seem to find them all on their own. 🤍

recently got engaged, and my future daughter-in-law, , tucked a few blooms into her pocket for their photos.

There is something incredibly special about seeing flowers grown here on our farm become part of a moment our family will remember forever.

Congratulations, Zach and Cheyenne. We couldn’t be happier for you both. 🤍

Few dahlias have achieved the legendary status of Café au Lait. She is the queen of dahlias.

She’s also the reason I started growing dahlias in the first place and the flower I designed my entire wedding around.

I know I’ll always have a soft spot for this one.
