We may not always have our ducks in a row here, but we have our goats in a row.
Black Dog Farm at Mount Welby is a beautiful, historic country home and farm, built in the early 1800's, located in the heart of Virginia wine country.
We may not always have our ducks in a row here, but we have our goats in a row.
Scarlett soaking up the sunshine yesterday during goat nap time.
My new office nook. We recently moved our bedroom downstairs to the main floor to accommodate our beloved senior dogs, adding doors to a previously doorless room. I found this little space so inviting and cozy, I couldn’t resist making it into a tiny work space.
Thank you - to all of you who sent your love and kindness following the passing of our dear Sophie. She had many friends and admirers! We truly appreciate all your comments and compassion - it has definitely helped us travel through our grieving process.
It is with unspeakable sadness and broken hearts that we report the passing of our sweet, beautiful Sophie.
Sophie was my ♥️ horse, and she was the queen of Black Dog Farm. She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She taught Phil how to ride. She let tiny people ride her, changing fear & trepidation into joy and confidence. She loved to run, often whinnying and talking as she ran. She gave us love, she made us laugh, she made us better humans.
Sophie had a progressive condition affecting both hind legs, which became acute and debilitating about a week ago. We did all we could to try to reverse it, but it became evident over the weekend that her pain was just too much. I knelt with her lovely face in my hands as she passed yesterday, Phil by my side.
Sophie, today your stall is empty and cold as the reality of your passing weighs dark and heavy on our hearts. But we are relieved you are out of pain. May you gallop freely across endless green pastures forever.
Sadie and Scarlett are twinning. (Scarlett chased Sadie and head butted her right after this picture was taken)
Sadie Mae doing her best to head butt Sally; please note tiny goat end up in the air.
Sally has been very gentle and kind teaching her little friend how to goat.
Being a barn kitty has its perks. Jake & Elwood snuggle in their favorite spot (a cardboard box underneath a saddle rack in our heated tack room) while the wind and snow rage outside.
Our little Sadie Mae is growing up! This little lady battled parasites, anemia and a basic failure to thrive in her early months, but after much intensive care here she is now growing fast and showing her sparkling personality.
Meanwhile, Thelma & Louise are relishing the snow and freezing cold weather. Gotta love those fluffy duck down covered tushies!
Roger the Rooster. His hens finally couldn’t take it anymore and decided walking on snow & ice was better than staying in their coop all day, so he had to follow or he would lose his man card.
Had a pretty awesome day at work today 🤠

For some reason, no one wants to come out of the chicken house today.
Scarlett is not subtle with her communication, most of which involves her staring a hole in me with her eyes to let me know she wants more food.
Little Sadie Mae twinning with Scarlett on sunny boulders Christmas morning. Sadie has graduated to being out full time with the big girls, which makes her very happy (except the part where Scarlett chases her and head butts her constantly😳).
Sometimes I feel like I’m constantly under surveillance…
December at Mt Welby, seen from our northeastern hillside. Somehow it retains its stunning beauty in every season.
It’s December, right? This volunteer snapdragon rose from the gravel last spring and it just won’t quit. Through excessive heat, drought, heavy rain, and now freezing temperatures it refuses to give up.
Been doing some fun renovations inside lately, including changing the den into a cozy bedroom. Pale blue paint, “new” salvaged shutters, and vintage settee. Much more to come!
Just another beautiful sunrise over Rattlesnake Mountain.
Sally says, GOOD MORNING!”
Dreams are sometimes felt along a long gravel driveway under blue skies and colorful fall leaves.
Loving the moonlit skies over Rattlesnake Mountain this time of year.
Saluting our veterans today. Thank you for your service ♥️🇺🇸.
Sunset last night at Mt Welby 💕.
***** ANNOUNCEMENT *****
To all our friends, followers, and guests: As some of you already know, we have made the decision to close the Inn effective November 1, 2021. We are extremely grateful to all who have made this past 5+ years an extraordinary experience, and contributed to a level of success which exceeded our expectations. The decision to close was made simply after Phil and I had a long conversation about our life priorities. We realized that as the Inn became more and more successful, we had begun to lose the one thing we value most: our time with family, friends, and each other.
But stay tuned! We aren't going anywhere. In the months to come, watch for updates as we work on taking the business of the farm in a new direction. We will continue to honor any outstanding gift certificates and future stays already booked.
So from Phil & I, and all the furry, feathered, canine, caprine and equine innkeepers, we thank each and every one of you who have stayed with us, liked our posts, written reviews, purchased gift certificates, and otherwise supported our business over the past 5 years. We have nothing but gratitude for you, your friendship, and this amazing journey we have had the honor of taking.
Kristen and Phil
Last harvest of the year from our kitchen garden. I see homemade soup in our future…
Took the scenic route home from voting yesterday to enjoy the fiery colors of our Fiery Run Rd ♥️.
Our beautiful American Ash tree is especially stunning this time of year.
(Btw I took this picture while our septic system was being pumped 😳🤣.)
Fall is here at Mt Welby!
It seems the goats have some of the best views around here…hey honey, maybe we should move into the barn! 😜
Morning after the storm…my view from the goat yard after early farm chores.
Just a goat hanging out with her favorite hen. All the chickens love Sally.
They play violently, shove each other around while eating, and sometimes act like they don’t like each other, but in the end Scarlett & Sally are the best of goatie friends.
Laverne is voicing her displeasure that Shirley is in her favorite nesting box. She won’t use any other box. Girl wants what she wants.
Peeking over the red geraniums hanging from our front porch to witness a stunning morning sky.
Summer Napping Goals, by Thelma & Louise.
Gracie doesn’t give a rip about pandemics or politics, but she is an expert in comic relief 🤣.
Rainstorm ended right at dusk, leaving us with a spectacular golden glowing sky. Nature never ceases to amaze!
Mr Phil took little Sadie Mae for a stroll in the bramble this morning…she was in heaven. 🥰
Another stunning sky at Mt Welby last evening as we walked outside to feed the animals.
The gladiolas in our chicken garden were blooming beautifully…until two cloven-hoofed bandits managed to shove their way in through the recently fortified fencing 😬. It was nice while it lasted! I’ve added electric wire in the new fencing but the garden is toast.
‘Twas a beautiful sunset last night at the farm…this was our view as we walked back to the house after feeding the animals.
Happy Friday! From Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, aka Scarlett & Sally. 😜😂
Happy International Cat Day from Jake! He is one of our all-star barn kitties, along with his brother, Elwood. ♥️
Scarlett hanging out with her new bunny friend 🥰.
Sadie Mae says good morning!
Happy 12th birthday to Niko & Nina! You are the sweetest, most beautiful, loyal & honest companions ever and we are the luckiest humans to have you in our lives. ♥️💕♥️
