Life among our cover crop never gets old...

The sounds of nature make all our worries go away, at least for a little while! 😆

Although the sheep have mowed down our cover crop and moved on for the Summer,

our cover crop helps us all year to:
🌱 Prevent erosion
💧 Hold moisture
🪱 Feed soil microbes
🐝 Support pollinators

What started with our great-grandparents has grown into a farm focused on healthier soil, healthier trees, and healthier food for future generations.

For over 7 years, we’ve been farming regeneratively using:
🌱 Cover crops
🐑 Sheep grazing
💧 Fewer synthetic inputs
🌎 Soil-first practices

You return to your roots and farm the way your ancestors did...

They spread manure from their livestock to fertilize their fields. We graze sheep for their natural manure to help improve our soil BUT also fertilize with natural inputs.

Does it smell good? No! But that stinky stuff (fermented fish and veggies) isn't just good for the trees, it stimulates soil microbial activity, too!

In between orchard irrigation and alfalfa, we still need to focus on ground prep in some fields.

This is another location for a native hedgerow, and we're lucky that it already has sprinklers ready to go!

This hawk is always hanging out and watching us, and is very vocal. We have never seen a nest, so maybe just chatty? Hoping for something small and furry to bolt? We've watched them follow mowers to scoop up mice, rats, and snakes, so maybe it's simply learned that if it waits, it'll get a meal?

Efficiency is key, and sometimes you can make simple alterations in a block that completely change how you approach cultural practices!

We used to use two different sized mowers in the olives... the second one just for the East rows. Not efficient AT ALL!

With a little digging and smoothing, we'll never have to do that, again.
