We’ve been a little quiet on social media over here at Willow Tree Hiker Trail Farms , We have had a rough two weeks!
First we lost our Barred Rock Lavender. She vanished without a trace one day. We held hope and still would like to that she went off to hide on some eggs while broody ( there were signs that this could be reality).
Lavender was a riot. Sometimes even a pest. She came to us with a persistent rough spot with her feathers. She always looked like a hot mess at first. She was feisty and she was always roosting in random spots of the yard instead of where she was supposed to be at night. This often sent me on wild hen hunts. Her first molt with us was TERRIBLE. After this though she bulked right up and her feathers finally were looking nice. She was filled with personality.
Then a fox made its way to our yard and our neighbors saved the day and chased it off. However the flock scattered in fear. I happened to be out purchasing them treats, I came home to find them and all came home except Enui our Australorp. Her and Howl were akways the dynamic duo so it’s been odd seeing her apart. Willow always said “ I love the black ones!”
Finally and I hope this is the last for a very long time, our beloved adopted rooster Marshmallow!
He was a grumpy rooster when we met him and he moved from our neighbors to our home. He made his way into our hearts, and literally our home, and I’m pretty sure he started to love us too! Marshmallow spent a lot of time inside our house. Often living in our bathroom or on Willow’s climber. He’s the reason we know how to turn cloth masks into diapers. We would sit with him on the couch and watch movies with him. We nursed him back from injuries numerous times. Him and Law did NOT get along….but it was finally starting to get a little better between the two. It seemed like we were going to be able to keep him outside, just not in their coop of course ( he used an old one we have)
Then the other day he just never came home.
Willow says Marshmallow just dug into the ground to go back to his family ( his lost flock I’m assuming she means)
I like her version best 😅💚
Each one of our chickens is a member of our family. The kids absolutely adore them and spend a lot of time taking care of them. So losing 3 in such a short span of time ( with zero trace) was tough.
We did however welcome some new family members right away! This helped the flock as well as us 🐓 💞 🐓
