With deep gratitude, we want to say “Thank You” to the farm team for growing over 5,000 lbs. for donation and feeding our community. Glenn and Claire St. Tulnoynum and Ox Pillidge (not shown) Your hard work has sent the farm in a new and outstanding trajectory!

We also want to recognize and celebrate farmers and agricultural workers around the world as heroes of food, nutrition security, and land stewards. Too often, they are invisible, abused, and labor unrecognized. #whoseyourfamer

Thank you to Lynn D. for taking all this fresh veg (including Okra!) to the Spanish American Center (SAC) last Friday. Thank you to all our drivers who connect the field to communities in need.

Thank you to Senator Jamie Eldridge for coming to the farm to support the Food Security Infrastructure Grant and other state grants that fund farm investments to decrease barriers to adapting and mitigating climate and increasing food access. LCF received $9,500 in 2020 to invest in upgrades and new assets.

Food insecurity and food production are deeply intertwined. Our switch to a No-Till system is one way we adapt to climate change on our farm, but there are many more barriers to adapting to a changing food system. Lack of capacity, inadequate extension, institutional inertia, cultural acceptability, financial constraints, access to credit, scarce fertile land, infrastructure, lack of functioning markets, and insurance systems can further erode the food system and worsen the problem. Inadequate information on the climate and climate impacts will increase food insecurity and poverty in the State and around the globe.

Madagascar on the brink of climate change-induced famine

This is the first famine not due to war or politics - Just climate and this is a direct warning about climate change. We are a tiny local farm but are a part of the global agricultural system. We, too, are affected by changes in Ozone, carbon, rainfall, extreme heat, cold, and the migration of insects, pests, diseases. Climate changes give rise to differences in food security outcomes everywhere.

The country is on the brink of experiencing the world's first "climate change famine", the UN says.

Hurricane Henri is on its way for Sunday. Please keep an eye out for updates as we track the weather. We follow state guidance and alerts and we never put our staff or volunteers at risk. We do distribute the CSA in rain, but will shut down the PYO flowers in the event of lightening and reopen 15 - 30 minutes after the last strike.

08/19/2021

Due to tornado warnings we are shutting down the CSA this afternoon there is no pick your own flowers either.

Special Report on Climate Change and Land — IPCC site

Our farm focuses on bringing healthy local crops to those in need at the local micro level. We have a low carbon footprint and are implementing No-Till practices to be a net sink of carbon. We operate in our regional climate and based (yes, past tense) all our plans on traditional growing patterns.

How have we seen climate change on our farm? Too much rain. WAY, too much rain, decreased sunlight due to wildfires 3,000 miles away. Our farm crew can't work a full day because of smoke inhalation all day and crop plans that need to change on a dime. Food insecurity here and around the planet is about to get much worse—our mission and how we farm is the best thing we can do together to make a difference.

Out of an abundance of caution for our customers, volunteers, staff and partners we are instituting a mask policy for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

LCF sees nutritious food as both a human right and an issue of health equity. Meaning everyone has the opportunity to be as healthy as possible. When you come to pick flowers or to CSA pick-up please have a mask on hand. We want to be ahead of the Covid Delta Variant not a hot spot!

Could you all use a 1952 farmall cub tractor? Ran great last year, bought a Kubota, and don't need cub anymore. Plow (snow), chains are only attachments. You could sell it or whatever...but you would need to pick it up at my house in Groton.

My new favorite cook book (Vegetables, Antonio Carluccio) has a recipe I'd like to try that uses catalogna chicory. It says you can substitue radicchio, but the chicory sounds interesting and looks beautiful. I don't know if I'll be able to find this when I go out shopping, so if the farm is interested in trying something new next year, and it can be grown here, I'd love to try it.
Made one of my favorite pesto dishes last night. Had it with sliced tomato. Dinner in about 30 minutes. I cut the recipe in half, used a little less pastapasta nd a little more beans and potatoes -- 6 ounces of each. Made enough for 3, maybe 3 1/2 servings, depending on portion size. Buon appetito!
I made the most wonderful soup last night with a couple of the small cabbages from the farm. Simple and delicious!
Christine, does the farm have a farmstand as well as CSA's??
Thanks for the offer to take back the pots from your seedling sale, in the interest of sustainability!
Thank you for the Superfoods class this week! I just bought all the ingredients today to make that delicious salad we had. I learned new tips on cooking and eating healthy. See you again!
Thank you Sheila the goat for being such a fine CSA-pickup hostess today
Last week's beautiful butter lettuce was just perfect for this!
I made this with Christine's marvelous tomatillos and some local apples, and it was simply magical!
