“So God made a farmer.”

There’s a lot that goes into this life that people never see. Checking cows after dark, fixing the same fence again, feeding when it’s below zero, and hoping the next storm brings some rain.

Some days everything goes right. Other days you wonder what else could possibly break.

We’ve put a lot into the ranch over the years. There have been some tough times, but we’re still here doing what we love. Hopefully someday the next generation will be out here doing the same.

Wouldn’t trade it.

A little look back at Red Flame Ranch in the ’90s. Faded photos, familiar faces, and memories that get better with time.

A lot has changed since then, but the love for the cattle, the land, and this way of life still runs deep. Here’s to the people who put in the work back then and gave us something to carry forward.

Less than 2% of the U.S. population belongs to farm and ranch families.

Think about that for a minute.

Less than 2% are still getting up before daylight, checking cows in the cold, putting up hay, planting crops, fixing fence, fighting weather, and doing the work it takes to keep agriculture moving.

Yet the impact reaches everyone.

Direct on-farm employment accounts for only about 1.2% of U.S. employment, while agriculture, food, and related industries support millions of American jobs.

And despite all the changes in agriculture, 97% of U.S. farms are still family farms.

Agriculture has become a small percentage of the population, but its responsibility has never been bigger.

For us at Red Flame Ranch, ranching is more than producing beef.

It’s preserving a way of life.
It’s taking care of the land.
It’s raising livestock the right way.
It’s passing down knowledge that can’t be learned from a textbook.
And it’s making sure there’s another generation willing to carry it forward.

There may be fewer of us than ever.

But America still depends on the people willing to do the work.

Protect agriculture. Support producers. Preserve the Western way of life.

Not a bad commute home. 🤠🐂

We spent the day trailing cows back home to get everyone weighed in, and views like this are a pretty good reminder of why we do what we do.

There’s something about moving cattle horseback through the breaks, along the river, and back toward home that never gets old. These cows have spent the season out doing exactly what cattle do best—turning Montana grass and open country into something valuable.

Days like this aren’t the flashy side of ranching, but they’re some of our favorite ones.

Golden hour, a fresh calf on the ground, and one proud momma.

There is not much better than seeing a healthy calf up and moving around with the evening sun hitting just right. Moments like this are what make the long days worth it.

A new calf, another good momma doing her job, and another reason to be thankful to live this life.

Sometimes a good cow just needs a little help.

This cow’s teats got too large and swollen, which made it hard for this calf to get latched on and suck. We helped milk her out a little, got some pressure off, and helped the calf find the teat.

Big teats and udder issues can become more common as cows get older, especially after raising multiple calves. Over time, udder attachments can weaken, teats can stretch, and heavy milk production can make it harder for calves to nurse right away.

Once they get going, most pairs figure it out pretty quick, but this is likely going to be this cow’s last calf. She has been an excellent mother over the years and raised a lot of good calves for us, but sometimes you have to make decisions based on what is best for the cow herd long term.

For tonight though, momma is feeling better, calf got a full belly, and that is a win in our book.

Sun going down, cattle fed at the bunk, and another day at Red Flame Ranch.

Most people are headed home at this point, but this is usually when we are still out here making sure everything is fed and taken care of.

Looking up at a sky like this, let's us know we are right where we need to be.

We are proud to have our beef born, raised, and processed right here in the USA! This is a big step for consumers to know where their beef products are truly coming from. If you watch the clip, you might even notice some of our beef! 🥩 🐄

Starting in the new year, shoppers may notice changes to how meat products are labeled at the grocery store. New federal rules tighten the standards for when meat can carry a “Product of USA” label.
