Jamaica was one of the first colonies in what was called new world. Spanish rule began in 1509. Nearly 150 years later, the island was taken by the British on May 11th 1655 during the Anglo-Spanish War.

With the break up of the British Empire in the 1950s, Jamaica had several amendments to its constitution to allow greater self-government and a Prime Minister. In 1958, Jamaica became a founding member of the West Indies Federation, a political union of various islands in the Caribbean that were colonies of the United Kingdom. In September 1961, Jamaican dissatisfaction with the Federation and the slow pace of moves to independence led to a referendum in Jamaica that resulted in 54% of voters wanting to leave. The elections of 1962 were won by the Jamaica Labour Party under the leadership of Alexander Bustamante.

This led to the Jamaica Independence Act being passed by the United Kingdom Parliament on July 19th 1962, granting independence on August 6th 1962 when the Jamaican flag was flown for the first time. Bustamante became Jamaica's first Prime Minister and Jamaica joined the Commonwealth of Nations.

The main event of Independence Day is the Jamaica Festival, which is celebrated with a grand parade, traditional music, the World Reggae Dance Final and other events.

So today we say Happy Independence Day!

An Akan/Asante woman sold into slavery and brought to Jamaica, Queen Nanny has long been upheld as a figure of strength and rebellion in the Caribbean country. Nanny escaped from her plantation and took to Jamaica’s Blue Mountain region where she founded Nanny Town, a free village for Maroons - a cultural mix of African slaves and indigenous Arawak natives who refused to submit to British colonization. Nanny is revered for freeing an estimated 1000 Jamaican slaves, being a skilled warrior, possessing supernatural powers, and creating a stable community based on farming and trading. She was killed around 1733 during a battle with colonial enemies, and is recognized as Jamaica’s only female National Hero.

.kraal Bob Marley & The African Princess:

‘’You’re ugly!’’ These are his first words when he sees her. She is shocked. They have never met before. How could he address her in such a manner? Does he not recognize her?

We are in Los Angeles in the year 1979. Bob is 34 years old and at the height of his career. Under the watchful eye of his wife and backup singer, Rita Marley, a throng of groupies tries to desperately get his attention. Pascaline, her mighty father's "favorite" daughter, is not accustomed to being ignored. Indeed, she is the eldest of Omar Bongo Ondimba, president of Gabon, 55 (known) children. She stares blankly at the superstar for a brief moment before laughing out loud. He calls her ugly because her hair is straightened, and for rastas, hair is sacred.

Despite this first abrupt exchange, the daughter of the Gabonese president who came to attend the Wailers concert in Los Angeles offers to end the evening in the luxurious villa where she lives in Beverly Hills. The evening remains calm, but the young woman makes an offer that will trigger everything: She invites Bob to perform in Libreville. The singer has never played in Africa and says YES to the invitation. For him, going to Africa is a pilgrimage to the Promised Land.

This encounter would be the beginning of a short but very intense relationship. Pascaline multiplies trips on her private jet between Libreville, Los Angeles and Kingston.

At the start of their relationship in 1980, the reggae star is unaware that he only has a year to live. She will stay by his side until the end…
