There is so much hidden in the anatomy of a child struggling during play.

Their frustration, our own fear of them becoming upset or defeated. It triggers a natural desire to step in and resolve what we already have the knowledge to do for them.

But, what a sweet little victory I would've ruined if I stepped in with my solution (which was entirely different than what they came up with) to their problem. Children are SO capable.

On this homestead we practice permaculture as a belief that every living thing supports the existence of one another. In the garden our goal is to hold space for children to recognize that interconnectedness. It's been beautiful to watch that understanding grow, and to watch the size of our harvests grow with it.

Children are SO capable, they'll take care of what they know, the earth, themselves, their neighbors 🤍🥬

How strange it is to be anything! What a gift to feel everything!

On this homestead the goal isn't to curate a state of constant happiness, it's to raise children who know how to ride the waves of emotion.

On this homestead, child-led is connection-based.

Children learn respect and how to respond to the needs of our daily rhythm through relationships in a way that preserves their sense of agency and autonomy.

We take care of what we know, and a child does not need strict, rigid governance to hold a mutual care for themselves and their school community.

This first week back to school has been magical ✨️

On our child-led homestead, the first day of school isn't a push into rigid structure. It's an invitation into community.

Children aren't expected to immediately know the routines, perform independence, sit still, follow directions, or prove that they're “ready” for school. They get to decide how they enter the community.

And with that pressure removed, preschool seems a lot less terrifying.

What a gift to be a child's first lesson that love, safety, support, autonomy, and advocacy can exist outside of home.

There's such an interconnectedness between messy play and social-emotional learning.

The gift of child-led play is that children get to experience, again and again, that messes and mistakes are natural parts of doing anything as a human.

What a healing freedom it is to grow up knowing that getting something wrong doesn't make you wrong. That you can always try again 🤍🌿

Part 1 of an Itty Bitty series about the role of teachers here on the homestead. Because there's so much more happening in this child-led environment than just messes and play.

If your child isn't ready to sit at a desk for a structured day of learning... good! They're exactly where they're supposed to be.

A school that is ready for the child is one that adapts to them. There's so much pressure put on parents and children to be academically "ready," but the children ARE ready and SO CAPABLE, if we only give them room to be 🤍🌿
