Yesterday did not end as planned. Miss Jackie is in birdy heaven now, I believe she had Myco. Luckily she was already in quarantine so I think my big coop is okay. I am keeping a close watch on RJ who was also in quarantine with Jackie, making sure she does not show any signs of respiratory distress. I could not make myself do it, so my husband is the one who ended my sweet girls pain and suffering.

A little piece of our flock is missing today. 🤍

Today we had to say goodbye to one of our sweet girls, Jackie.

One of the hardest parts of raising animals is knowing that loving them also means sometimes having to make incredibly difficult decisions. Jackie became very sick, and despite doing everything we could to make her comfortable, it became clear that the kindest thing we could do was let her go peacefully.

It’s easy to think that quail are “just birds,” but anyone who raises them knows each one has their own personality, quirks, and place in the flock. Jackie was loved, and she’ll be deeply missed here at Cumberland Covey & Crumb.

As heartbreaking as today has been, it also reminds me that caring for animals means celebrating the joyful days and carrying the weight of the difficult ones. We give them the best lives we can, and when the time comes, we owe them a peaceful goodbye.

Fly high, sweet Jackie. Thank you for every tiny egg, every happy chirp, and every moment you were part of our little suburban homestead. You’ll always be a part of our story. 🕊️🤎
