Our newest cow Molasses had her calf💙

Molasses has always lived on a small scale dairy— so her calves have always been taken away from her pretty quickly. I’m really excited to let her keep her calf this time🥰. I’m really hoping she settles into raising a calf and being milked. So far so good!

Once she settles into milking we will give Honey a much needed break. She’s been in milk for well over a year now and won’t have another calf until January.

Not a tractor.
Not a bigger barn.
Not 20 acres.
Not even a dairy cow.

A Brian.

He’s the guy putting in water lines after work, building fences on weekends, figuring out why something isn’t running, moving heavy things, building things I found on Pinterest, and somehow building everything we dreamed of for this place.

Most farmers can’t afford to pay someone to build and fix things. They have to do it themselves. So if you’re planning on building a farm, make sure you have a Brian that can literally do it all.

People see the cute animals, the fresh milk, the homegrown food, and the pretty sunsets.

What they don’t always see is the person behind the scenes making all of it possible.

So if you’re thinking about starting a homestead, here’s my best advice:

Find someone who’s willing to build the dream with you.
And if you already have your own version of a Brian, give them a shoutout in the comments!

Because around here, weekends aren’t for sleeping in or brunch reservations. They’re for moving fence before the heat sets in. Milking cows before coffee. Fixing the thing that broke yesterday. Hauling hay. Feeding animals. Pulling weeds from the garden. Cleaning stalls. Refilling water troughs and feed bins.

And honestly? I wouldn’t trade it.

There’s something about ending the day exhausted for a reason that just feels right. Dirty boots by the door. A sink full of dishes from food you made yourself. Watching the sunset over land that feeds your family. Knowing your weekends built something real instead of just disappearing.

It’s hard work, sure. Sometimes inconvenient. Sometimes overwhelming. But it’s also the kind of life that makes Monday feel no different than Saturday because the work matters every single day.

So yeah… genuinely curious. What do y’all even do on weekends if you don’t have a farm? 😂
