The ERL recently took custody of 17 Morgan horses that were left abandoned when their owner passed away. He left no provisions for his beloved herd of purebred horses. Only the farm they are on to his grown children, who asked for our assistance, in safely and humanely removing the horses from the property and place them in homes where they can be cared for properly.
The herd consisted of 2 geldings, 14 mares and one stallion, all but three are black, ranging in age from 16 to 30. Some of which are registered with the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA). At this time, all but 4 have been placed into loving homes.
Of the 17 horses, one 30+ year old mare was in dire need of dental care and parasite control. Pictured below, she is currently being rehabilitated and will be available for adoption once she is up to a healthy weight.
With your generous donations, we are able to continue providing the care they need.

In September, we receive an email that a lady’s grandfather passed away and her grandmother could not care for the horses. When the grand-daughter went to the farm to look at the horses, she realized that these horses needed help and wanted them to be safe from slaughter.
The ERL teamed up with another rescue and picked up 7 equines. We took 3 of them and the other 4 went to a rescue in West Virginia. A 2 year old mini, Penny, had a halter grown into her face. We acted fast and had the vet out to assist in removing the halter and get her on antibiotics. There was also a mini stallion that has now been castrated and a blue eyed mini mare.
All of these ponies are available for adoption. Please contact visit our website at https://www.equinerescueleague.org/available-horses if you are interested in adopting and complete the application and return it to us.

Come out and see us at the Equine Rescue League for the Fall Open House. Today and tomorrow 10am to 4pm.
Fall Open House is October 15th – 16th and we need your help!
Our amazing main Open House baker is out of commission, which means we need to borrow your ovens, recipes, skills and time to bake sweet treats to sell during our fundraiser to raise money for the horses at the shelter.
Cookies, cakes, pies, breads, brownies, cupcakes and other sweet treats needed!
Baked goods can be dropped off at our farm shelter in Lovettsville on:
Thursday 10/13 Friday 10/14 Saturday 10/15 Sunday Morning 10/26
Please join our list of open house bakers by sending us a message! [email protected]
BAKE SALE GUIDELINES
1) Please do not bring store bought items – unless they are give-aways for the volunteers to eat. Our customers expect homemade goods!
2) Remember – we eat with our eyes as much as our mouths – so not only should the baked goods taste good, but they should LOOK good – it’s all in the presentation!
3) Don’t just bring a sack or box of cookies – it is a lot of extra work for whoever mans the bake sale table to also have to package and price your items. Bag your cookies in sacks of 4-6. Try to make large cookies – as these sell better – about 3-4” across. If they are smaller than 3”, put at least 6 in a bag. That way we can price all bags of cookies the same.
4) Pies are a HUGE seller. Be sure to wrap the pie in plastic wrap – I usually purchase cardboard circles (or large inexpensive paper plates to first put the pie on, and then wrap all together. Label your pie and price it. I have lots of recipes(for all baked goods) if you need them – email me at [email protected]
5) Cakes are also a big seller – you can change them up, simply by adding chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, nuts, etc. to the batter. Sprinkles on the frosting make them festive!
6) Breads also go quickly – please try to keep the loaves in either 8x4 or 9x5 pans – the little ones do not sell as well. One volunteer ties her breads up like a package with a pretty bow – and they ALL sell!!
7) Brownies are the first to go – next to the pies – dress them up with different chips, coconut or nuts – but plain are always great. Please cut them in 2x2” squares at the minimum. That way we can have one price for them – and do not bring them in a pan – wrap each one in plastic wrap. I know it’s time taking, but remember, it’s for the farm! And LABEL – especially if there are nuts in them.
8) Cupcakes are ok – but very messy – and we can only get about $.25 for each one – so if you are bringing them, put them in a big foil pan with a clear lid so the flies don’t get to them. Decorating them is a plus – think about Halloween candies or gummy worms – sprinkles are always great! M & M’s look cute too.
Thank you you all sweetly for your help and support!
Mark your calendars folks! The Fall Open House is happening October 15 & 16 from 10am - 4pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The ERL has recently taken custody of 17 Morgan horses, that were left abandoned when their owner
passed away. He left no provisions for his beloved herd of purebred horses. Only the farm they are on to
his grown children, who have asked for our assistance, in safely and humanely removing the horses from
the property and place them in homes where they can be cared for properly.
The herd consists of 2 geldings, 14 mares and one stallion {who has been placed}, all but three are Black,
ranging in age from 12 to 30. Some of which are registered with the American Morgan Horse Association
(AMHA).
The ERL is in IMMEDIATE NEED of homes for these beautiful horses. Currently there are 12 horses left to
be placed. The 2 geldings, Meriden’s Black Jack a 1999 black gelding and Meriden’s Angus, a 1997 Bay
gelding. Both are sired by Caduceus Jessie. Of the 10 mares, we know that Tetonia Black Allegra, a 1998
Black mare, by Caduceus Kirov; Meriden’s Black Rose, a 1998 black mare by Caduceus Jessie: are among
the 10. Some of the other mares could be by Duke of Rosewind, but we are unsure as the owner
stopped registering them in 2000. The AMHA has offered to help us with identification using DNA.
While range of training is unknown, all these horses are showing us great temperaments.
Please reach out to us ASAP, if you can provide a home for any of these horses or can provide help with
transport. Our goal is to coordinate transport and places for them to go (whether temporary or
permanent) next Friday and Saturday Sept. 23 and 24.
We can be reached at (540) 822-4577 or [email protected] Please share this on your pages as well. Thank you for all your help and love!

Tomorrow, the 2022 Clear The Shelters Campaign comes to an end. Over the past 30+ years, the Equine Rescue League would like to say that with the support of Tri-County Feeds in Marshall Virginia, we are able to supply quality feed and hay to the animals that come through our doors. We use their TC complete feed blend that works well in maintaining our horses weight and giving them a nice shiny coat and rehabilitating the ones that arrive needing groceries. Thank you Tri-County!

The Equine Rescue League is celebrating its 32nd Anniversary. We were established on April 26, 1990. Our shelter has saved thousands of equines through out the years. Without support from you, we are not able to continue our job caring for these voiceless animals and educating the public on neglect and cruelty. It is vital to have support from all of you. CLEAR THE SHELTERS 2022 - Today’s video is of River. She was featured back on August 6, 2022. Below you will find a recap on her.
River is looking for her forever home. She is a super sweet 2014 Falabella Horse, standing at approx. 37" tall. River came from a back yard breeding operation, that did not have the animals’ best interest. While she is 8 years old, she has not received any training, nor has she ever been ridden. With patience and guidance this pony could be a cherished member of the family. This week during Clear The Shelters Campaign, we are focusing on ER Kitty Hawk aka Kitty.
ER Kitty Hawk aka Kitty, is a bay approximately 2006 Miniature Horse mare standing around 28 inches tall. She is a victim of laminitis and has rotation of the coffin bone in all four feet. At this time, she is not foundering, however she could never be turned out on grass as she is also insulin-resistant. She is available to a home that will provide her a comfortable, healthful environment to suite her needs.
If you are not in a position to adopt, please be a part of giving back by donating to the Equine Rescue League or try giving a gift. Our Sponsorship Gift Program consists of a donation (monthly or a one time donation) that is set up to care for one of our equines waiting for their forever home. Our sweet donkey matriarch, Rachael, recently made her earthly departure from Promise Kept Farm. If you were ever blessed to spend time with her, you always walked away with a smile and a great love for her. She was the epitome of Promise Kept Farm. Every human found her to be a safe, loving haven to just be themselves. Rachael's extraordinary presence and her unforgettable bray will be sorely missed. Her spirit will, without a doubt, shine brilliantly in all that we do here at Promise Kept Farm. Please feel free to share one of your favorite stories about Rachael in the comments section of this post. Also, if you would like to make a donation in honor of Rachael, you can do so at www.equinerescueleague.org/donate Thank you kindly for your continued love and support. <3

Mr. George Rascal 1990-2021 The only thing miniature about George was his size. His spirit and opinions were of grand proportions. His favorite convictions were a whip of the head, an excited whinny, and a hoof stomping, especially at feed time. George’s vision was perfect when it came to making the most of life. We can all now envision George joyfully whipping his head around and taking in all the glorious sights with his ERL friends in paradise. Rachael is doing well considering all. She is currently residing in the main barn. She is supervising us humans at feed times and enjoying the company of her barnyard buddies. Donations made in honor of George can be sent to Equine Rescue League P.O. Box 4366 Leesburg, VA 20177 as well as equinerescueleague.org/donate Thank you kindly for your continuing support and love!
ERL wants to enormously thank Dr. Hyde, his fantastic dental crew, our awesome volunteers and staff, for a successful Dental Day! Kitty Hawk and the rest of the equines were all rockstars and are doing well! 💖🐴🦷🎉
It is with the heaviest of hearts, we must share with you that Bruno recently made his earthly departure. Bruno, King of Gentlemen. The sweetest, gentlest soul you could ever meet. Bruno enjoyed his senior years immensely at Promise Kept Farm. He loved a good roll in the mud, getting groomed by his human admirers, taking his time enjoying his meals, but his favorite pastime was hanging with and doting over his exceptional mares. Bruno, a quarter horse that filled our whole hearts with love, joy, and wisdom. "Those who teach us the most about humanity aren't always human."
We are only one day away from the big day of giving! We cannot thank you all enough for the early donations that are coming in. An awesome anonymous donor has offered to match $5,000 in donations as well. Every dollar that is donated makes a difference. Donate today at: www.givechoose.org/equinerescueleague Make sure to follow along tomorrow (March 16th) throughout the 24 hours of giving to see how ERL is doing with meeting goals and raising funds for our needs. Until then, here is a word from our president, Cheryl Rogers, sharing her inspiration and passion for the ERL mission as well as her heartfelt gratitude for all of the continued support and love from you all.

During this early opportunity of giving for GiveChoose, ERL would like to highlight Harrison and Archie. While they are awaiting their forever home, it costs approximately $5 per day to feed them here at Promise Kept Farm. Every dollar counts, and we appreciate your donation during this GiveChoose event. Donate today at www.givechoose.org/equinerescueleague Thank you kindly!💕🐎💕 Here is a thorough description of two sweet equine boys for anyone that may want to adopt them and bring them into your forever loving family. Harrison is a 1996 gelding of unknown descent. He stands at 16.3h. Archie is a 1997 standard donkey gelding. While we know nothing about Harrison and Archie's past due to the fact that they were abandoned by their owner, we do know that they are some of the most kind-hearted and sweetest-natured animals you could ever meet. They are super easy to work with and love attention of any kind. This pair is extremely bonded and must be adopted out together. If you are interested in Harrison and Archie, contact ERL at [email protected] or 540-822-4577. You can find more information about our rescue as well as our adoption process at www.equinerescueleague.org
Just as there are abused dogs and cats, there are neglected, abused and unwanted horses in the greater Washington Metropolitan area. Unfortunately, facilities capable of caring for large animals are limited.
More than 25 years ago in 1989, while working with humane officers investigating auctions, I personally saw more than 300 cases of horse abuse and neglect in our area in just one year! Unfortunately, even today abuse and neglect continues.
At this and other auctions, old, sick and crippled horses in severe pain were loaded on slaughter trucks facing a long and painful journey or death by trampling when they could no longer stand.
The following month, two colts not even one year old died Christmas Eve 1989 from starvation and exposure as they stood outside with no food or shelter from the cold wind. Their only source of water was a frozen pond.
Since founding the ERL in April 1990, I have learned no equine is immune to being mistreated. ERL has provided shelter to everything from miniature mules to draft horses, from unborn foals to 40-year-old mares, from grade horses of unknown breeding to granddaughters of Secretariat and Northern Dancer.
All can be subject to abuse or neglect and all are welcome to ERL. Unfortunately, the farm shelter has limited capacity and often horses in need must be turned away.
We have come as far as we have because of the efforts of horse lovers in our local communities and our online networks, but we need your continued support to ensure the future operation of this shelter for abused equines, and to work toward improving our facility, enabling ERL to help eve more horses in the future.
In honor of Bitsy and others that could not be saved, I ask for your help. Let us work together to offer an end to the suffering for these innocent victims.
