We are always asked what’s in our hog field this time of the year…

It’s a mix of things, but the eye-catcher is the T-Raptor Hybrid Forage Rape.

T-Raptor is a forage hybrid brassica that produces a bulb that gets HUGE in our hog field. Some reasons we love this cool season annual:

* High forage yield
* Multiple grazings
* Graze in 6-8 weeks after planting
* Rapid regrowth
* Suitable for all grazing our hogs and cattle
* Great for soil health

We usually plant this the first week in September and get excellent coverage out of it. We don’t graze it until the Spring. The pigs are getting a little taste now, but the rest of the mix will start producing spring forage soon and that will yield a lot of great forages in a few weeks!

There are a lot of things happening in the world right now. Just know that we are moving forward with full plans to increase our production of pasture-raised chicken and beef this year (might be giving Turkeys a go, too). We plan to keep our freezers full to the best of our ability while respecting our families limitations. We anticipate there will be supply issues from the Ukraine-Russia conflict. We just don’t know what that fully looks like yet. Mostly just praying for the children and families caught in the crossfire today ❤

We are open at the farm all weekend 8-6 pm.

We are closed this weekend at our Route 9 Market due to the temperatures.

While we have some extra space in the chicken freezer we will be offering some cauliflower and turmeric soup from The Salt Pot Kitchen. This soup is perfectly paired with one of our pan-seared chops. They buy a lot of ground pork from us so it’s fun to get to carry something of theirs! We will be stocking this soup this afternoon (Saturday) after their market ends. I will also add that Wendy allowed me to request the removal of the word “vegan” on their label and I greatly appreciate it. So now you can buy this wonderful vegan-free soup at our farm store!

Holding the down the gate so these little pigs are kept safe while we refresh their bedding and feed. Our new barn has served our fields and pigs very well this winter. The pigs are breaking down the straw, hay and wood chips down at a beautiful rate. We project we have elevated at least 2 feet in this barn. If the barn is 72’ x 30’ that means we have made roughly 385,600 lbs of soil/compostable material or 193 tons.

Impressive.

In a few weeks will clean the barn and distribute this valuable fertility to other areas of the farm. While we clean the barn the pigs will get to start grazing some spring annuals and they will be happy happy happy!

Everyone loves piglets! We started farrowing some pigs at the farm last year and had our first winter litter the other night. 11 little Berkshires on the ground. Timber was delighted to watch them and touch a few through the gate this morning!

We got a couple inches of snow at the farm last night but we are open as usual today if you want to visit the farm store. Open 8-6 PM.

Our on-site farm store is open 8-6 pm today and tomorrow will a full selection of pork, beef, chicken (limited), eggs, cheese, and more.

Claire (pictured) will be at our Route 9 Market TODAY (Saturday). We will be closed there tomorrow. She has a selection of our pork, beef, chicken, eggs, krauts and cheese.

Pop-in and grab a few items while she’s there today 11-5 pm.

Every year on this farm has brought change. When we started this thing we were 25. We didn’t have much money, but we did have a lot of dreams. We got married on this farm and started our family.

Management is ever-changing due to production growth and kids! We had a lot of time and energy at 25… we are now 36 and have had three kids in the last 5 years and it’s changed our bodies, our energy, our management and the way our farm functions. There is no 8-5 pm out here, just a lot of work and a lot of decisions.

Wouldn’t have it any other way…. It’s why my email signature says it might take me 3-5 days to respond so call if it’s an emergency! I try to not be available to the technology demands of this world. My phone seems to follow me and I enjoy the freedom when I leave it and just enjoy being outside with the kids. I want them to know parents that look and see them, not a mama who quiets them for another phone call or text message (bc it definitely happens!).

We are so thankful our family helps us because we don’t do this alone. These kids keep us on our feet and it’s been so fun seeing them change…. Piper was driving the tractor tonight and Boone was pushing the buttons… it’s not all easy and fun with the little ones tagging along, but it’s definitely worth it.

Our Story

Long Stone Farm is a grass-based diversified livestock operation located in Lovettsville, VA at the base of Short Hill Mountain. Long Stone produces pastured pork, beef and chicken and duck eggs on over 100 acres in Loudoun County. Long Stone Farm is owned and farmed with care by Justin and Casey Wisch, and their children Piper and Boone. The Wisch family focuses on producing high quality meat and eggs in managed grazing systems that are beneficial to our livestock and surrounding ecosystems. We do not spray chemicals in our fields and provide nongmo feeds to our animals. More information about our farm and products can be found on our website at www.longstonefarmva.com

On Wednesday, I toured several towns and villages in western Loudoun, including Aldie, St. Louis, Paeonian Springs, Hillsboro, and Lovettsville. In order to get a better understanding of issues that are currently before the Board of Supervisors, I visited the historic Aldie Tavern as well as the Village of St. Louis, where I learned how significant these two places are in Loudoun’s rich history. I then met with Chris Van Vlack, president of the Loudoun County Farm Bureau, who guided me to my other stops. Our first stop was at Northern Virginia Wholesale Growers where I met one of the owners, Ramesh Seetram, and got to see the various vegetables and flowers he and his business partner offer. My next stop was at Dunthorpe Farm Veterinary Services where owner Dr. Kelly Foltman showed me her veterinary facilities and her beautiful horses. I also had a delicious lunch at Stoneybrook Farm Market and got to see up close the Route 9 revitalization project completed by the town. Finally, I ended my tour at Long Stone Farm where I met the owner, Casey Wisch who explained the various components to running a farm and being in the livestock business. I had a fantastic time learning more about the importance of preserving Loudoun’s rural economy, and I encourage everyone to visit western Loudoun and support our local farmers!
