Good info thought I would share I follow this advice also
Good morning my fellow chicken lovers ❤️
I wanted to share some info on feed for our precious bantams 🐣
Silkies/satins do best on a 24% protein base diet. 20% very bare minimum with high protein treats to supplement. Anything less than that, typical 16% protein layer feed for example, is definitely inadequate in protein, but is also lacking enough nutrients for them. If fed a layer feed diet, the birds will fail to maintain healthy weight and start wasting away, eventually succumbing to malnutrition.
Silkies/satins are also prone to deficiencies in vitamins B1, B2 (thaimine), B6, B12, E and D, and I highly recommend supplementing regularly. Any supplement provided to them should cover all 6 of these, plus selenium. Selenium is necessary for the absorption of vitamin E, while thiamine (B1) is necessary for the absorption of all other vitamins. Being prone to vitamin deficiencies is also why silkies/satins should never be given medicated chick feed. The medicated feed contains amprolium (same medication used in Corid) which is added to prevent coccidiosis, however, amprolium is also a thiamine blocker. Thiamine (B1) is the vitamin necessary to absorb all other vitamins they ingest, except vitamin E. With thiamine being blocked, the poor chicks are prevented from absorbing the other essential vitamins they need from their feed. The liquid amprolium is ok for a few days to a week if treating for coccidiosis, but no longer than that.
Deficiency in B2, B6, B12, and/or D can affect balance an mobility, lameness, foot and/or leg paralysis, and more
Vitamin B1 and E deficiencies will result in wry neck.
Feed brand/type is personal preference, unless you can find the minis, most commercial pelleted feeds are too big for silkies, so crumbles or mash are usually best. Good base feeds are 24% protein chick starter crumbles, 20% Flockraiser crumbles (with high protein treats supplementing), gamebird feed of at least 22% protein, etc.
The best liquid supplements for silkies are Red Cell (equine) and Poultry Cell. They are very comparable, though Red Cell is a bit lower in iron and you csn purchade it in larger quantities, for less $. Both varieties are most easily administered be being mixed into the drinking water, 1-2 times per week, starting at 12 weeks old.
Calf Manna is also a great supplement choice, but will not work as a standalone supplement as it does have some gaps, so I use it to make my own scratch. I mix Calf Manna pellets, whole black oil sunflower seeds, whole flax seeds, and black fly soldier larvae or mealworms.
Commercial scratch is best not fed at all, as it is just empty carbs and fat, with little nutritional value, much like potato chips are for humans. If you really feel you must feed commercial scratch or cracked corn to them, keep it to 1 teaspoon or less per day for silkies and other bantams, and 1 tablespoon or less per day for large fowl breeds.
* this is shared information that I found very helpful ❤️ so I wanted to share with everyone*
Banded more babies today
We are located in Vermont so this doesn’t affect us—-Well the state of Georgia is the first state to go on lockdown because of the avian influenza. No sales of any birds or hatching eggs. We just got tested for our renewal of AI clean today, will know results by Friday but don’t anticipate any problems because our birds are kept inside. We are following strict bio security. No one will be allowed on property to pick up birds or eggs we will meet you off property. Hopefully Vermont doesn’t go on lockdown.
I have lots of Silkie 🥚🥚 that can travel today or tomorrow BBS, Paint, SL Chocolate, lavender/black split to lavender and mottled splits message me!
I’m closing my bobtail waitlist till I can get caught up. The Bobtails aren’t laying right now but hopefully they will start again soon!!
Some chick love for your enjoyment 🥰
