Advocating for your dog keeps you, your dog, and those you visit safe.
An ATD Member told us:
During a recent therapy dog visit at the airport, a young girl became very excited to pet my dog Indy. As her excitement grew, she started to hug Indy and reach for her face. Noticing that this could possibly make Indy uncomfortable, I calmly redirected the child by saying, “Let’s watch Indy do some tricks.” That shifted her attention in a positive way, gave Indy some space, and allowed a fun experience to continue. It reminded me how important it is to set gentle, respectful boundaries that protect the therapy dog while still making it an enjoyable therapy visit.
