Known as the “Mushroom of Immortality” in traditional Chinese medicine, Ganoderma lingzhi has been cultivated and studied for centuries. This antlered specimen spent the last six months growing here at Hill City Mushrooms.

Just got some new chicks, and one way we’re putting our spent mushroom blocks to use is tossing them into the run! 🐥🍄

Even after they’ve finished producing mushrooms, the blocks are still full of mycelium and organic matter. The chickens love scratching through them, pecking at them, and hunting for anything hiding inside.

It’s a fun form of enrichment for the flock and another way we make use of materials that would otherwise be discarded.

We also sell spent blocks to local gardeners, homesteaders, and farmers for composting, soil improvement, livestock enrichment, and more.

Nothing goes to waste around here!

Someone recently asked if our mushroom photos were AI-generated.

Nope.

Every photo, logo, label, graphic, and piece of artwork you see from Hill City Mushrooms was made by an actual human.

Before mushrooms, I spent years doing photography, graphic design, and digital art, so creating content for the farm is something I genuinely enjoy.

Do we use AI at all?

Sure. Sometimes it helps clean up the formatting of a caption, organize information, or catch a typo before I hit post.

But the mushrooms are ours.
The photos are ours.
The designs are ours.

What you’re seeing is the real farm, real products, and real work behind them.

A lot of people say they “don’t like mushrooms”…

…but their only experience was canned mushrooms or dry portobellos baked onto a pizza 😅

That’s like saying you don’t like Mexican food because you’ve only had Taco Bell.

Most people’s introduction to mushrooms is honestly a terrible one compared to the savory richness, meatiness, and deep umami flavor of fresh gourmet mushrooms 🍄

Rivermont Farmers Market kicks off today!

We’ll be set up from 3–7 PM at First Christian Church on Rivermont Ave with a full Hill City Mushrooms table.

We’re bringing fresh mushrooms, grow kits, tinctures, Lion’s Mane seasoning, mushroom jerky, dried mushrooms, mushroom pasta, cocoa, coffee, and a few live fruiting blocks for the table.

Timelapse of inoculating 35 10lb blocks.

This is where the next round starts. Sterilized substrate, clean lab work, grain spawn, seal, shake, label, then off to colonize.

A few weeks from now, these blocks will be turning into fresh mushrooms for market, farm pickups, restaurants, and grow kits.

A lot of the work happens before anyone ever sees mushrooms on the table.
