It’s dahlia tagging day!

I went through lots of plants today, checking that each bloom matches the variety on its tag. Then it’s simply a matter of pulling out the skewer, wrapping the stalk with the tag with green rubber wire, and voilà!

When it’s time to store the tubers, the tag gets wrapped around the storage bag and later the crate so we know exactly what’s inside, these rubber wires and plastic tags get reused every year and by far we have found it our fav method

I love using different colors for the tags. Since we grow 3–6 plants of many varieties, the colors make it so much easier to keep track when we’re digging. All the same-colored tags go into one crate. How are you coming with your dahlia tagging? We have a few rows plus a couple to go yet.... 🌸

Here's a couple seconds in the world of hybridizing when goodbyes need to be said. It's not all a loss though, because these funny ones often make us laugh.

I was showing someone at North Sound Flower market today some of funny hybrid photos I've taken and she found it so intriguing. The genetics of dahlias are incredibly diverse. I love that she wants to try it next year herself.

Come and arrange a market bouquet with me! From start to finish and including clean up this took less than 20 minutes!

A couple tips:
1. Start with foliage. Let the leaves drape over the rim of the vase. Also, you don't want any leaves in the water.

2. Add the big flowers. Put them low in the vase. Again, let some drape over the rim of your vase.

3. Keep the stems longer on the little flowers. Keep them higher and give them their own space.

4. Add something that dances and moves in the breeze: bunny tails, explosion grass, quaking oats, etc.

5. Keep in mind the eyes love triangles! Three big orange flowers, 3 white zinnias....

6. Know when to stop. The extra blooms go in a little vase for another room.

That's it! You can make a market bouquet go into a vase in 20 min!

Last dahlia show for us for this year was Saturday at West Coast Garden in Surrey, BC. 🇨🇦.

My basket of Sandia Bliss had some competition this time around and I was happily surprised it got the award it did.

I staged the basket with the foliage Ninebark, Diablo which went well together. I didn't love some aspects of my staging however - not domed enough, front a little too tall but I felt if I pulled it apart and redid it - there was a possibility of if looking worse -- so I left it as is and moved on to work on my vase if 13. So this outcome was a super nice surprise.

Sandia Bliss is both beautiful and prolific and these blooms came from I'm guessing 8 plants with blooms all at the same stage.

It's fun at dahlia shows to watch non-dahlia growers admire the flowers. One lady asked me in all seriousness if the blooms in the basket were real. Yes, and I'll take that as a lovely compliment. 😊

Last picture is with Sandy Boley, hybridizer of Sandia Bliss and all the Sandia waterlilies. She's so generous in sharing growing tips and this is the first year we have a little secluded waterlily patch for collecting seeds, following her advice. Sandy went for a long drive last year to secure more exhibition baskets from Floral Syndicate in Seattle and graciously let me buy this exhibition basket from her and she delivered it to my house for me. So sweet! I'm glad we could get this photo together.

Crossing the border back into the US the agent asked if we were bringing anything back from Canada into the US? Just a couple of ribbons Dave said. I promptly held one up so she could see it and she smiled and said "Congratulations!"

This was my entry for the “Dawn of Early Light” category at the Whatcom County Dahlia Society show last weekend.

The assignment: sunrise-colored dahlias, any design style.

I rummaged through my vase collection and landed on this blue beauty. I bought it at a second hand shop in Traverse City, Michigan, last October—and was thrilled it got home to Washington in my suitcase in one piece. The blue "book" is a storage box from my office shelf.

I had a mere two blue hydrangeas, bunches of seedling dahlias, a few zinnias, ONE blue delphinium blooming in the garden along with mixed foliage.

And then I said to myself, 'Let's see how this goes"

And my entry got both a blue ribbon and a section champ for the Amateur arranging category! (I moved up this year from Novice arranging.)

I love the creative process and always learn something in every entry I make. The arrangement categories always stretch my mind a bit and I love the challenge. I'm also super interested in seeing all the entries and admire all their creative visions in the same category.

People love seeing the arrangements at the show and it was a lovely compliment when I saw people take photos of the ones I created.

I hope you enjoy seeing these arrangements too. 💐
