Regenerate Nebraska RegeNErating Nebraska Communities from the Soil Up

05/20/2026

A good follow for a more regenerative mode in raising chickens is the Organic Compound.

We hope the good work up north inspires more tree-range chickens in Nebraska. If anyone is interested in learning more about this healthier model for raising chickens, or even possibly touring the tree-range farms shoot us a note.

Many thanks to those who volunteered at Christensen Farms by planting a 100 tree field border๐ŸŒฒ which will slow the impact of the west winds. This project will also help protect the homestead's fruit trees ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ from chemical drift, and allow the potential for livestock habitat ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŒณ in future years as the trees mature.

A huge thank you to the Nebraska College Preparatory Academy (NCPA) who assisted the Christensens in the project. This RegeNErate Nebraska field day was part of the NCPA program which supports first- generation and income-eligible students to achieve academic excellence. These gifted students receive guidance on their path to college through academic counseling, mentoring, and service learning experiences aka volunteering! Shout out to Steven Kirchner for organizing the student field day and lending a hand throughout the process.

Also, thanks to Nate, Justin, and Doc for helping to land the trees. Thanks Alaiya for showing up and Nick for helping us finish up. Thanks Nielsen Tree Farms (Lyons location) for the healthy stock and to USDA EQIP for the cost-share support. And thanks ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ to Mother Nature for the rain โ›ˆ๏ธ

For inquiring minds, the trees included 25 red cedars, 50 ponderosa pines, and 25 norway spruce.

Thank you Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society for throwing an amazing annual gathering! RegeNErate Nebraska was proud to support a scholarship to encourage new attendees.

There was lots of focus on regenerative agriculture and soil health at the event, and also fascinating conversations around fruit/nut trees and grafting, grazing lands, local food systems, specialty crops, water resources, organic transition, food as medicine, health, urban agriculture, and much, much more.

The event was held the last week of January and we strongly recommend attending next year if you are interested in these discussions.

A new study directly links ultra-processed foods to higher rates of chronic diseases, calling it โ€œan urgent public health threat.โ€

Authors of the study say relying solely on changing behavior isnโ€™t enough and they are advocating for policies to regulate ultra-processed foods and a system that supports local food producers.

One Omaha nonprofit is already doing this work in the community. No More Empty Pots teaches gardening and cooking classes to make fresh food preparation less intimidating while helping people access and choose locally produced foods instead of ultra-processed options.

An Omaha nonprofit is helping to get fresh food from farms to pantries, schools and businesses.

There is growing momentum in Nebraska around regenerative agriculture! This was highlighted by the good attendance and the growing depth of questions at the recent Northeast Nebraska Ag Conference. The event was held December 16th.

Thanks to the incredible lineup of sponsors and the hard-working organizers for making this farmer and rancher conversation possible ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐ŸŒฑ

Over our lifetimes we have closely observed efforts to remove structures and policies that protected the middle-class, including rural people. What is left is being torn apart at an alarmingly rapid rate.

Across the country, rural communities are facing higher costs, shuttered hospitals, increasingly degraded waterways, and farmers are facing tariff uncertainty, a lack of new markets, and inflated input costs. This toxic mix makes it harder to live the good life, but simple policy fixes could restore government so it serves rural people and family farmers once again.

It's time for a redirect to policies that work for rural America. 40 organizations have come together to highlight 26 practical policy priorities that start to reconstruct a better government.

The 2025 Rural Policy Action Report lays out a roadmap for how Congress can fix many of today's biggest problems facing rural people. It focuses on addressing critical issues impacting rural communities with solutions that protect the environment while creating new opportunities for more rural people.

A few of the issues we helped bring to the forefront of the report include: anti-trust enforcement on big monopolies to level the playing field for family farmers, fair trade with a focus on domestic market development, right to repair, regenerative agriculture, indigenous security, renewable energy development, access to good rural healthcare, funding for SNAP, and tax reform.

This is a plan built by rural advocates who know what works through their lived experiences. Together with you, we can rebuild our rural communities from the soil up.

Rural advocates identify priority legislation and executive action that supports working families and strengthens rural communities.

How does food get from fields and gardens to our tables? Thatโ€™s what Brownell Talbot College Preparatory School 2nd graders are exploring with guest speakers, as well as how our food choices impact ours and othersโ€™ lives.

The depth of questions from the students made for a really fun discussion. No matter where we go, young people are excited about regenerative agriculture solutions and how we can RegeNErate Nebraska!
