While visiting my parents on the Outer Banks, my mom and I sneak away to visit my favorite local plant nursery Nature's Harmony, Manns Harbor . Boy did we get in trouble! 2 wagons of plants were bought between the two of us. I even finally got a Hellebore! Sometimes homesteading means making hard choices. 💔🌱

These blueberry bushes were planted by my husband’s great-grandfather and had grown over 10 feet tall—completely overtaken by briars, privet, honeysuckle, blackberries, and even trees. As much as we wanted to save them, they were struggling, and the fight against invasives would never end.

So this winter, with a rare 70° day, we chose a fresh start. This space will become a mixed berry patch—more variety, healthier plants, and a future that’s easier to steward.

Honoring the past doesn’t always mean preserving everything exactly as it was. Sometimes it means making room for what comes next and keeping a family farm growing for the next generation. 🤍

I just loved these Plant Labels made by Pop’s Barn Ceramic Studio in Manteo so I asked that she make a set for me. Then my mom surprised me with them for Christmas. I just love the color and whimsy they add to my plants and I love to support local artists like Cody Dough. If you want a set be sure and reach out to her or a local ceramic artists near you.
